A new Space Jam: A New Legacy poster teases LeBron James' team-up with Bugs Bunny and the rest of the Looney Tunes. After being in development for a number of years, the long-awaited Space Jam followup is right around the corner. The film is set for release this July, where it will premiere in theaters and on HBO Max the same day as part of Warner Bros.' distribution strategy for 2021. With only a few months remaining until Space Jam: A New Legacy's debut, the studio is starting to rev up the marketing campaign.

Over the past month, plenty of Space Jam: A New Legacy details and materials have been released, including a collection of still images and character posters sporting the Looney Tunes' new 3D designs. All of this is a precursor to the Space Jam: A New Legacy trailer premiere, which happens this weekend. But before viewers finally get a chance to see footage from the movie, another one-sheet has been revealed.

Much has already been said about how Space Jam: A New Legacy differentiates from its predecessor, telling a story about fatherhood. The main story revolves around James and his fictional son, Dom, as the two get stuck in a virtual reality populated by WB characters. From the sound of things, Space Jam: A New Legacy is attempting to draw viewers in with a compelling emotional core, but this poster is a reminder the new film will stay true to the franchise's roots. Just as Michael Jordan did in 1996, James will be teaming up with the Looney Tunes to win a basketball game. Even if this entry has more substance in the narrative department, viewers should still expect plenty of fun, cartoony hijinks - especially during the big game.

It will be interesting to see how Space Jam: A New Legacy pulls this balance off. The original is a beloved touchstone among 1990s kids, but it was hardly a critical darling, so there's definitely potential for the followup to be an improvement. Ryan Coogler's involvement in the creative team is particularly intriguing, since he's demonstrated an ability to inject plenty of heart and humanity in his directorial projects such as Creed and Black Panther. Nobody's expecting Space Jam: A New Legacy to be an Oscar contender, but it would be nice if it's a quality, entertaining movie.
