Fans of the Looney Tunes and LeBron James won’t have to wait for the film to see the biggest basketball game of the year in Space Jam: A New Legacy. The sequel to the 1996 classic has a pre-game warmup on the way in the form of a new comic from DC Comics.

Space Jam is the fictional account of NBA legend Michael Jordan’s first retirement from professional basketball, and his efforts to help keep the Looney Tunes from being enslaved by the owner of an alien theme park. The film integrated animation and live-action to throw Jordan into the absurd world of Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck as they challenge the aliens to a basketball game for their freedom. It introduced Lola Bunny and the antagonistic Monstars, made up of the extra-terrestrials assuming the stolen athletic abilities of stars like Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, and Shawn Bradley. The movie was a box office hit, and talks of a sequel lingered until finally, Space Jam: A New Legacy was announced. Space Jam previously had a comic adaptation by David Cody Weiss that stuck pretty closely to the events of the film. The only glaring thing missing from the condensed and faithful comic rendition was Space Jam's climax featuring Bill Murray.

The release of Space Jam: A New Legacy is going to be preceded by a comic adaptation from DC Comics. Ivan Cohen will write alongside various artists to bring the adventures to the page. Details on Space Jam 2: A New Legacy have been scarce, so if this comic is as faithful as the original, it could provide the first insight into the events of the film, and the challenge that the Tune Squad are up against this time.

Those who worked on the film have said themes of fatherhood are integral to the storyline, and mini-controversies, like Pepe Le Pew’s removal, have at least confirmed what won’t be in the film. In addition to the Looney Tunes mainstays, Don Cheadle and Sonequa Martin-Green are set to appear alongside a collection of current-day NBA and WNBA stars, including Damian Lillard, Diana Taurasi, Anthony Davis, and Nneka Ogwumike. It’s very likely they could all make appearances in the adaptation depending on their roles.

Space Jam is far from the only time the Looney Tunes have crossed over with other universes, or that NBA players have found themselves in comics. DC Meets Looney Tunes saw characters like Martian Manhunter and Marvin the Martian encounter each other. Notably, Batman and Elmer Fudd faced off in an unexpectedly riveting noir tale. In Godzilla vs Charles Barkley, the Space Jam alumni faces off with the famous kaiju based on a Nike commercial where the two collided. LeBron himself is no stranger to the pages of comic books. Following his initial championship with the Miami Heat, ESPN the Magazine and Marvel teamed up for LeBron: King of the Rings. While that comic ended on a cliff-hanger, fans of basketball and comic books will get another chance to see James grace the page with DC.

Space Jam 2's comic adaptation goes on sale 06/29/2021, with the movie premiering on HBO Max on 07/16/2021. In either case, Space Jam: A New Legacy is more likely to give Lebron James and the Looney Tunes the kind of spectacular finish that fans have been waiting decades to see.
