New information has been revealed about the upcoming South Park video game, as co-creator Matt Stone has confirmed that it will be developed in-house, rather than given to an external studio. The initial crop of South Park video games was published by Acclaim, but these have universally been described as shallow cash-ins, which were rushed out the door when the show first became popular.

The South Park video games entered a new era of quality in 2014, when South Park: The Stick of Truth was released. The creators of the show were directly involved in the production of the game, and the hardware of the day could handle visuals that resembled the basic animation style of the show. As such, The Stick of Truth was hailed as the best South Park game to date, as it felt like an actual episode of the show. The Stick of Truth was followed by The Fractured but Whole in 2017, which used the same visuals, but changed up the gameplay style, as part of its genre shift from fantasy to superhero.

It was recently revealed that a new 3D South Park game is entering development, though no other information was made available. South Park co-creator Matt Stone told Bloomberg that the game was being developed in-house, rather than by another studio. Stick of Truth was developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Ubisoft, while The Fractured but Whole was developed and published by Ubisoft. As of the time of writing, there's no word regarding a publisher for the game.

It might seem like an expensive prospect to develop a video game in-house, as even companies like Disney will farm out the Star Wars license to EA, but money currently isn't an issue for the South Park team. Trey Parker and Matt Stone are making the South Park video game as part of a $900 million deal with ViacomCBS, which also ensures that the show will continue until 2027 and that the duo will create movies for the Paramount+ streaming service. If Parker and Stone want to own their own video game production studio, then now is the time to do it.

The creators of South Park were involved in the production of The Stick of Truth and The Fractured but Whole, which is reflected in the quality of the game's writing. If they have a direct stake in the upcoming South Park video game, then there's a good chance that it will also receive the same level of attention. Fans likely won't know more for a while, as the game has just been revealed, and it could be years before it receives a more formal announcement.
