South Park: Post Covid: The Return of Covid features Butters Stotch as the evil and dangerous Victor Chaos, but this persona actually rectifies the insults Butters frequently faces throughout the series. South Park's latest special follows the cast as adults attempting to stop a new outbreak of Covid-19 from shutting down the city for another 30-50 years. After Kenny dies trying to travel back in time to stop the pandemic, Stan and Kyle have to race Eric to his technology to make sure they end up in the right timeline.
In South Park's Post Covid 2, Butters Stotch lives as his alter ego Victor Chaos in the future. He’s in an insane asylum after his parents grounded him in his room and left him there for 16 years, never returning. Being trapped in his room and the long-time abuse and neglect from everyone around him pushed him to fully take on his Chaos persona. While grounded, he had access to the internet and became incredibly inept at selling NFTs, and once out of punishment, he used this skill to trick people into investing in them. His NFT abilities have led to the downfall and demise of hundreds, which is why he’s in the insane asylum in the first place. While this outcome may seem like a worst case scenario for Butters, South Park Post Covid's Victor Chaos actually makes up for much of his childhood.
Throughout its many seasons, South Park uses Butters as the butt of countless jokes. His presence increased in season 6 to replace Kenny as the fourth friend to Eric, Stan, and Kyle, and since then he has been a cornerstone of the show. Many of his stories are based on his innocence and naivety, often falling victim to the plots of the other boys. Eric frequently tricks him into committing crimes, many of his classmates make fun of him for being too innocent, and he struggles to be taken seriously, especially as his villain persona Professor Chaos. Additionally, his parents abuse and neglect him, frequently punishing him for things he didn’t do. The character is terribly mistreated, but his future in South Park Post Covid 2 rectifies these insults.
Victor Chaos is everything Butters isn't. Most importantly, though, Victor Chaos is needed for knowledge of the time travel fight after Kenny's death in Post Covid. Butters was mocked for his uselessness as a child, so the fighting to get him on each of their sides proves his usefulness. As an adult he's confident, convincing, and smooth-talking, which Butters never was as a stuttering and unsure kid. Victor Chaos is taken seriously as a threat; his NFT ploys are dangerous and lead to major destruction, unlike Professor Chaos's early plans. By making Victor Chaos everything Butters isn't, it gives his character agency that came out of his mistreatment. For once, Butters, as Victor, is able to stand up for himself and proves himself just as useful and destructive as the other boys used to be as children. Considering where Stan, Kyle, and Eric end up, it's a marked improvement from where he could've been.
In the "correct timeline" when South Park stops Space Jam 2 and the pandemic, Butters is never grounded for 16 years and never becomes Victor Chaos. Instead, his future self, still going by Butters, was just promoted to manager at the Denny's Applebee's Max, which he finds very fulfilling. The boys again use Butters as the butt of their joke, his innocence seemingly unbroken. While this seems like the better ending since he's not Chaos, it erases a lot of the validation Butters has when he's Victor. South Park spends so much time insulting Butters, that his best future is one where he retaliates and ends up on top.
