Somehow it slipped past us late last year that Jake Gyllenhaal had been cast in Duncan Jones’ first movie since the insanely well-received Moon, entitled Source Code. Nonetheless, we get word of more casting additions to the time-travel film and info that will bring you in the loop if you’re not already.
THR’s Heat Vision Blog reports that Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air) is in negotiations and Michelle Monaghan (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) is already set to star alongside Gyllenhaal in Source Code, a film written by Species 3 writer, Ben Ripley, which has had revisions done by Billy Ray (State of Play, Breach). THR describes the story as follows:
“Source Code centers on a soldier (Gyllenhaal) who, as part of an experimental government program to investigate a terrorist incident, finds himself in the body of an unknown commuter living and reliving a harrowing train bombing until he can find out who is responsible for it.”
Farmiga is set to play a hands-on communications officer who controls Gyllenhaal’s character, Colter, as he travels through space and time. Monaghan is set to play the love interest of the train commuter Gyllenhaal is inhabiting. Mark Gordon is producing the film along with Vendome CEO Philippe Rousselet and Jordan Wynn.
Source Code certainly sounds like an interesting sci-fi film, one that to me sounds like a cross between Minority Report and Avatar, with a bit of Deja Vu thrown in there (what with the terrorist bombing mixed with futuristic technology). I’m especially interested in the project since it’s from the same director as Moon, a film that although I didn’t love as much as most, I still found to be a fascinating and well-judged examination of human loneliness set within an unusual location, carried by an Oscar-worthy performance by Sam Rockwell.

With Source Code being described as Jones’ first film post-Moon, I wonder what happened to his other project, Mute? We last reported on Mute last summer, with Jones’ saying he already has it written (he had it written even before Moon). But Source Code appears to be up next for Jones so we’ll let you know when Mute will come into play.
What do you think of the plot for Source Code? Do you like the casting for the film so far?
Source Code is set to go into production this March and is expected to be released sometime in 2011.
