'Sound of My Voice' Opening Minutes Offer Dark & Intriguing Mystery

For those who claim there's nothing original being done in movies, we'd just like to take this opportunity to remind you that there are fresh ideas being put to film everyday: They're called "indie movies" and a lot of people never bother to see them unless they win a bunch of awards or are one of the lucky few to blow up into a mainstream hit (see: Paranormal Activity).

Not only are there original films made on the indie circuit - there are indie-focused studios that continue to come up with clever ways to get unique films in front of your face. Some studios release their movies on Video On Demand early, others come up with clever viral campaigns, and - as is the case with Fox Searchlight's upcoming thriller Sound of My Voice - some let you actually test-drive the movie via a extended clips and previews.

By "test-drive" we're referring to today's clip from Sound of My Voice, which covers the film's opening segment (about twelve minutes). The clip introduces the basic premise of the film (more on that in second) and its principal characters, while doing a pretty darn good job of presenting a titillating mystery that's hard not to want to explore.

Check out the first 10 minutes of Sound of My Voice below:

A lot of the links in the video lead to the Sound of My Voice viral campaign, which is impressively extensive and goes to great lengths to integrate the plot of the film into the real world. Now that you've gotten a taste of the movie and the (semi-)big reveal that "Maggie" may be (or may not) be a traveler from the future, check out the official synopsis for Sound of My Voice:

In SOUND OF MY VOICE, Peter (Christopher Denham) and Lorna (Nicole Vicius), a couple and documentary filmmaking team, infiltrate a mysterious group led by an enigmatic young woman named Maggie (Brit Marling). Intent on exposing her as a charlatan and freeing the followers from her grip, Peter and Lorna start to question their objective and each other as they unravel the secrets of Maggie's underworld.

The film was co-written/directed by first-time feature director Zal Batmanglij, with star Brit Marling (who plays Maggie) also helping with the script. Christopher Denham, Nicole Vicius and character actor Richard Warton (the cult member "Klaus" who greets the new recruits) have all had bit roles in various TV or film projects, but are poised to really breakout into bigger things, should this film become a hit.

All-in-all, Sound of My Voice seems like a good psycho-drama that could have anything from sci-fi to horror elements woven into it (or, simply some grounded human drama - it's unclear at this point). What can be said is that this is a smart way for Fox Searchlight to be selling this film to the masses. Before today it was barely on our radar - after today, we'll be making a point to go out and see it. How about you?

Sound of My Voice will be in theaters on April 27, 2012.
