The Soul World in Avengers: Infinity War Doesn’t Actually Exist

Thanos in Soul World in Avengers Infinity War

Avengers: Infinity War VFX artists reveals that the Soul World doesn't actually exist. One of the most ominous scenes of the film came toward the end when Thanos (Josh Brolin) reunites with a Young Gamora (Ariana Greenblatt) not long after he's successfully wiped out half of life in the universe, and - given the orange filter of the mysterious realm - fans quickly assumed it must be the Soul World.

Since its release in April, fans have been carefully dissecting Avengers: Infinity War for any possible clues left that would help them figure out how events might unfold in Avengers: Endgame. As it turns out, speculation regarding the mysterious location where Thanos and Young Gamora meet have gotten an answer once and for all. That said, the answer is far more open-ended than fans might have hoped.

Speaking with IGN, Digital Domain's Kelly Port and Marvel Studios' Dan DeLeeuw opened up about the creative process of bringing to life what fans have been assuming to be the Soul World in Avengers: Infinity War. In the process, they revealed that there is actually no official name for this location. Instead, they just referred to it as "the way station." Port even goes as far as saying, "I don’t think it’s a place that actually exists," adding that only Feige can definitively say where the scene is meant to take place. That said, DeLeeuw noted that it was intentional to have the sequence as vague as possible, leaving it up to audiences to interpret.

Now, just because no official name has been revealed yet for the mysterious realm doesn't necessarily mean that it's not eventually going to be referred to as the Soul World after all - a reveal possibly being saved for Avengers: Endgame. As Port noted, the decision to incorporate an orange tinge was Feige's idea, and since it's safe to say that the Marvel Studios' President was aware that the VFX team was trying to color code everything associated with the Infinity Stones, this decision adds more evidence to fan speculation.

This also goes to show how much little is known about how the Infinity Stones actually work - something that helps Marvel Studios keep people guessing in regard to how Thanos can be defeated. Several theories posit that the supposed Soul World holds the "dead" heroes, but Port and DeLeeuw's recent comments effectively squash that claim. While the Quantum Realm and the concept of time travel are expected to play a factor in the narrative, it's still difficult to gauge how exactly things will go down in the Phase 3 capper. And, considering Marvel Studios' knack for pulling huge plot twists, especially following what they were able to do in Avengers: Infinity War, fans can anticipate some unexpected twists and turns in the upcoming movie.
