When people watch animated family-friendly movies from Pixar, they tend to expect a fun movie that will have some comedy and a great story with plenty of heart. However, what sets Pixar movies apart from other animated movies is the fact that they're always packed with moral lessons and quite often, lots of emotion.

The movies always do a really nice job of blending the comedy with emotional moments, in order to make them accessible to all ages. However, while some of Pixar's movies push more into the comedic elements, others certainly rely more on emotion, with these 10 movies being a true rollercoaster ride.

Monsters Inc (2001)

Sully And Boo Monsters Inc

Monsters Inc is Pixar at its very best. A new world with lots of vibrant and colorful characters with a vast amount of personalities all being sewn together with an amazing story. Flipping the stereotype of monsters being scary is a wise move, but that only makes them more relatable and emotional.

The emotions come from various ways, with the connection that Boo has to Mike and Sulley being such a great one. The slight tension and fallout between the two monsters is certainly sad too during those moments, but not many scenes are sadder than Sulley saying goodbye to his human friend.

Toy Story 4 (2019)

Woody and Buzz looking out over the carnival in Toy Story 4

Toy Story 4 was a big risk from Pixar, mainly because the trilogy that came before it was seemingly wrapped up in such a perfect manner. However, once again Pixar delivered, with the popular toys having one more exciting journey that was full of emotion.

Seeing the character of Forky go through the journey of acceptance had emotion, and the story involving Gabby Gabby was certainly full of heart as well. However, it is the final scene where Woody decides to stay with Bo Peep, leaving the rest of the toys that creates an incredible amount of emotion, seeing him leave what is essentially his family.

Toy Story 2 (1999)

Jessie and Woody sitting on the window ledge in Toy Story 2

While the latest edition into the Toy Story franchise is certainly an emotional movie, it doesn't quite live up to Toy Story 2 when it comes to emotional value. This is a fantastic movie, which adds a whole host of new characters to the franchise, while also creating a backstory for Woody.

It's his story that brings all of the emotion to this movie, with Jessie and Bullseye really wanting to feel like they belong for the first time. Jessie's story about becoming a lost toy is one of the most heartbreaking moments in the entire franchise, and it really does make this one of the most emotional movies Pixar has ever created.

Soul (2020)

Joe playing the piano in Pixar's Soul.

Pixar's newest movie Soul certainly packs an emotional punch right from the start, when the lead character Joe ends up dying, right before he gets his big break. His fight to literally save his life is endearing to watch, and throughout that journey, he meets 22, who helps bring a very different perspective to his life.

While 22 might initially be grumpy and resistant to life on Earth, when 22 ends up in Joe's body, it sets off a really emotional part of the movie. Hearing Joe has open conversations with different characters, from his barber to his mother, there are a lot of really eye-opening scenes that certainly have a lot of people thinking.

Onward (2020)

Tom Holland and Chris Pratt in Onward

Speaking of new Pixar movies, Onward was a 2020 release and it is a movie packed with emotion. This has so many different elements rolled into one, from being about personal growth to the friendship between brothers, with their desperate bid to meet their father for just one day being the ultimate quest.

As Ian and Barley do everything in their power to get their father back, and as each minute passes by and that situation becomes bleaker the emotions of the movie only heighten. Ian's sadness is clear to see, and his realization that Barley has been a father figure to him, sacrificing his moment to meet his actual father is a very emotional scene.

Inside Out (2015)

Inside Out

This is literally a movie all about the emotions inside of someone's head, so this was always going to be an emotional rollercoaster. There are moments that will make you laugh and others that will make you cry in what is one of Pixar's most relatable movies.

Everyone has experienced some of the emotions that Riley deals with throughout this movie, and that makes it very easy for people to connect with, which only grows throughout. Seeing her genuine heartbreak about having to move and leave her friends is tough, meanwhile, the difficulties that Sadness goes through and the loss of Bing Bong only makes this movie even sadder at points.

Finding Nemo (2003)

Marlin with Nemo in Finding Nemo

Finding Nemo is all about a fathers desperation to find his lost son, and that is a plot that is incredibly easy to connect with on an emotional level. Marlin's sheer panic when he sees Nemo gets taken is an incredibly emotional moment, and the journey he goes on after that point keeps that tone throughout.

His growing friendship with Dory is equally charming, which is at its best after the jellyfish stings when he believes she has died. Of course, the movie starts out incredibly emotional as well, with Marlin's wife and all of his children (as eggs) being eaten by a shark. Thankfully, there's plenty of really funny moments within the movie as well to balance this one.

Toy Story 3 (2010)

The ending of Toy Story 3

Out of all of the Pixar characters, those within the Toy Story franchise are the ones that people have the biggest connection to. This is because of how much personality they have and the high quality of stories that have been told with them.

There was so much emotion packed into this movie, with Woody desperately trying to still be there for Andy, while being conflicted about leaving his friends behind. The moment when they are headed to the furnace brought tears to many adults, but the scene where Andy gives up his toys was truly heartbreaking in the best way possible.

Up (2009)

Carl and Ellie in Pixar's Up

The opening sequence of Up is one of the most emotional of any movie, period. Without a single word being uttered, this sad sequence grips its audience and tugs at the heartstrings by quickly showcasing the life of Carl and Ellie, with the ups and downs that come with it.

That sequence sets the tone for the entire movie, which has a lot of emotion throughout. Following Carl as he desperately tries to do the one thing that he told Ellie they would do, seeing Paradise Falls. His personal journey of growth throughout is incredibly emotional, especially with young Carl, with the two ending up having a strong father-son type bond, which certainly brings the emotion.

Coco (2017)

Coco

Coco is the most emotional of all the Pixar movies to date, with this having so many different moments that will make someone cry. It's all about the love of family, people feeling betrayed and following passions and Miguel's journey throughout it all really is amazing.

The final scene where he sings to Coco is incredibly emotional, with this being one of the saddest scenes in Pixar history, but in a good way as she begins to remember her family. It's heartwarming, but Hector's journey to desperately get back to see his family one day a year and Miguel's attempts to help him are emotional to say the least.
