Pixar releases a new trailer for their upcoming movie, Soul. Directed by Pete Docter (Up, Inside Out), the film is the studio's second original offering of 2020, following this month's Onward. Jamie Foxx stars in Soul as Joe Gardner, a music teacher who finds himself in the mysterious soul world (dubbed The Great Before) after falling down a New York manhole. In typical Pixar fashion, the ambitious Joe is paired up with a soul named 22 (Tina Fey), who is content to be remembered for her silly cowboy dance. The mismatched duo will have to work together to help Joe's soul get back to Earth and learn some important lessons along the way.

Marketing for Soul got underway last fall with a teaser trailer that set up the basic premise and underlined the main themes of the film. Understandably, Disney/Pixar has spent the time since then prioritizing Onward, which came out in theaters last week. Now that that movie is out, attention can turn to continuing the Soul promotional campaign. With only a few months remaining until Docter's latest hits the big screen, Pixar has shared a new preview for viewers to enjoy.

Docter's never been afraid to tackle heavy subject matter in his Pixar films, be it Up dealing with the grief of losing a spouse or Inside Out's moral that it's OK to be sad sometimes. From the looks of it, Soul is going explore similarly deep thematic material, packing a serious emotional punch for viewers. 22's line, "Is all this living really worth dying for?" is pretty serious for a family film coming out in the middle of summer, illustrating Docter's going for another emotional and introspective story here. Of course, Soul will have plenty of the humor Pixar is known for (the sequence where Joe's soul tries to eat pizza is worth a chuckle), but Docter's track record indicates it will have significant substance to make it an intriguing and poignant entry in the Pixar canon.

Soul entered 2020 as one of the year's most anticipated films and the hope is it can recapture that old Pixar magic. Onward received generally positive reviews, but the general consensus is it's one of the studio's second-tier efforts and Onward also struggled at the box office during its opening weekend. Pixar made a name for itself with daring and imaginative original films that explored the human condition via high-concepts, and Soul appears to be cut from that same cloth. Hopefully, it does very well critically and commercially when it's released later this year and Pixar sees there's still an audience for their original stories.
