Despite Morbius being a critical failure and having one of the biggest weekend drops in box-office history, Sony is still keen on continuing their Marvel Universe, now dubbed Sony's Spider-Man Universe. The only problem is that this universe still doesn't seem to have a Spider-Man, although he was mentioned in Morbius' post-credits scene.

As filming for Kraven the Hunter is underway, Sony has a multitude of other Spider-related projects, even including television series. Venom: Let There Be Carnage was a ton of fun and felt more or less like a step in the right direction, but hopefully these films will fare better than Morbius.

Madame Web

Dakota Johnson Madame Web Julia Carpenter Cassandra Web

Work on the Madame Web spinoff film began in 2019, with Matt Sazama and Burk Shapeless being hired to write the film after previously working on Morbius. Although fans want to see Tom Holland's Spidey join the series, Sony continues to make films based on other Spider-Man characters. By February of this year, Deadline reported Dakota Johnson had been cast in the lead role, leading many to speculate she'd be playing the Julia Carpenter incarnation of the character who is much younger.

Also cast in the film is Euphoria's Sydney Sweeney, whose role remains under wraps. S.J. Clarkson is set to helm the film and previously directed episodes of Jessica Jones and The Defenders. Not much is known about the film, but it's said to be "Sony's version of Doctor Strange" with rumors it'll further explore the multiverse, per Heroic Hollywood. The film could have the potential to be something really cool and unique.

Nightwatch

Marvel's Nightwatch

In 2018, THR reported that the legendary Spike Lee was in talks for a film based on Nightwatch, a more obscure Spider-Man character, who bears a strong resemblance to Spawn. The same article also reported Luke Cage writer and showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker was hired to write the film.

When asked by ScreenRant later that year if he was still involved with the project, Lee gave a simple, yet humorous response "Nah". Having a talent like Spike Lee helming a superhero film sounds too good to be true. Had it happened, perhaps the whole scope of Sony's Spider-Man Universe would be completely different today.

El Muerto

The fact that a film centered on El Muerto is even happening is honestly hilarious. The character has only ever appeared in two comic issues in all of history. Despite being one of Spidey's most obscure foes, his story is quite interesting. The only problem is that his story directly involves Spider-Man and wouldn't make much sense without him.

El Muerto is tasked with beating and unmasking a masked hero as a promise so that villain El Dorado won't kill him. Considering the only other masked hero in this universe is Venom, it just wouldn't work the same. Per Deadline, The film will star world-famous Latin Popstar Bad Bunny in the title role and is set to release on January 12, 2024.

Jackpot

Jackpot and Spider-Man

Jackpot has the potential to be a really cool film. In comics, Jackpot is the superhero identity used by both Sarah Ehret and later Alana Jobson. After choosing to give up crimefighting to raise her family, Ehret sells the Jackpot name to Jobson who takes on the mantle. Jobson goes on a real journey to find herself and eventually realizes she's gay after being in denial for a long time.

Her journey as a character can be very relatable to young LGBTQ+ audiences and Jackpot could be the first gay superheroine to headline her own film, which would be historic. According to Deadline, Arrow co-creator Marc Guggenheim was hired to scribe the film after previously working on Jackpot comics. However, no updates on the film have been given since 2020.

Silk

Tiffany Espensen as Cindy Moon AKA Silk

Silk has only grown in popularity in recent years. Although not a major character in the eyes of the general viewers, comic book fans know a lot about Cindy Moon. In 2020, per Deadline, Sony announced a partnership with Amazon Prime Video to stream their Spider-Man Universe shows, with the first being Silk.

Deadline also reported Tom Spezialy was hired as showrunner in 2020. In 2019, Deadline also mentioned the role could go to Tiffany Espensen after portraying Cindy Moon in the MCU films Spider-Man: Homecoming and Infinity War. However, it's unclear if this is still in the cards. Regardless, a Silk television series is an exciting prospect, as it could give more time to develop her character.

Silver & Black

Silver Sable and Black Cat

Initially planned as a film before being split into two separate films, Silver & Black is back in development, but this time as a TV show.  When it was a film, it was set to be written by Westworld co-creator Lisa Joy alongside Geneva Robertson-Dworet, who co-wrote Captain Marvel and the 2018 Tomb Raider, according to FandomWire. However, it is unclear if they will remain on board the series.

Gina Prince-Blythewood, who was originally set to direct the film, recently confirmed the film had been turned into a limited series with the potential of it streaming on Disney+. She will remain as a producer. She recently gave an update to THR saying "I loved it more as a film with the two of them. So, my hope is that one day it can still happen".

Spider-Woman

Daisy Ridley as Spider-Woman and Olivia WIlde confirmed to direct

In 2020, Olivia Wilde was hired to direct an untitled female-centered superhero film. She later confirmed this on Twitter and many trades reported that the film would be based on the Jessica Drew incarnation of Spider-Woman. Recent comments from Olivia Wilde have also had many speculate if the film will be a co-production between Sony and Marvel after she said (via The Illuminerdi) "All I can say is that this is by far the most exciting thing that’s ever happened to me because not only do I feel like I get to tell a story that… God, like, listen to me trying to avoid like Kevin Feige’s pellet gun".

Due to Drew's origins tied with Hydra, Sony would not be able to adapt those aspects of her character unless working alongside Marvel Studios. Daisy Ridley has been the rumored frontrunner for the role of Drew and even expressed interest in playing her last year. Regardless, Wilde making a superhero film sounds like a great idea, especially after her directorial efforts with Booksmart and the soon-to-be-released Don't Worry Darling.

Electro

Jamie Foxx as Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man and No Way Home

Shortly after the release of No Way Home, Sony began toying with the idea of making a spinoff film based on Electro. After fans really resonated with the character in No Way Home, the film could give the character the opportunity to be a hero instead of a villain after he seemingly redeems himself in the climax of the film.

Sony could also go in a completely different direction and have Jamie Foxx play a different version set in the SSU. This could give them the opportunity to make him closer to the comics, as the MCU/TASM Electro is very different. CBR does however report that film has not been officially greenlit, but another film option does appear in Foxx's contract.

Venom 3

Venom 3 Needs To Have Spider-Man In It

At this year's CinemaCon, Sony announced a slew of upcoming projects which also included Venom 3. According to Variety, the announcement came in the form of a sizzle reel, showing several other upcoming projects from the studio.

After Eddie Brock was disappointingly transported back to his universe from the MCU, it's unclear where the story will go. Going off the ending of the previous film, it's very likely Detective Mulligan will be the antagonist of the next installment as the new symbiote Toxin, which was alluded to. Per ScreenRant, Tom Holland also revealed he has had discussions with Amy Pascal to appear in future Venom films. The eventual encounter between Venom and Spidey could be sooner than people expect.

Sinister Six

Vulture, Morbius, Kraven and Venom in SSU's possible Sinister Six

Originally planned as a spinoff film in the expansion of The Amazing Spider-Man franchise, Amy Pascal announced revived plans for the film set in the SSU. Drew Goddard, who created the Daredevil Netflix series, was brought on board to write and direct the film in 2013. He was also previously in contention to direct Homecoming.

Pascal revealed the plans to revive the film in 2018 with Vanity Fair saying "I’m just waiting for Drew to be ready to direct it. I would do anything with Drew Goddard." While this project could be very exciting, it seems Morbius has already laid out plans for the film after Vulture pitches putting together a team to take down Spider-Man in the film's post-credits scene. All of the Spider-Man connections are very confusing, but Morbius director Daniel Espinosa teased "audiences will discover the answer soon" when asked which Spider-Man exists in the SSU, via CinemaBlend.
