One of Sony's upcoming Spider-Man spin-off movies for 2024, El Muerto, gets a disappointing update. In April 2022, a surprising Spider-Man spin-off film was revealed to be in the works. Based on an incredibly obscure Spider-Man character, Bad Bunny was cast as the lead in El Muerto. The character has only appeared in two issues of Marvel Comics but is now headed for the big screen.

However, it appears the El Muerto movie may be facing some setbacks. Bad Bunny recently did an interview with Time in which El Muerto was briefly discussed. With a January 2024 release date set, the actor revealed that filming has actually not started. Bad Bunny's publicist clarified later on that El Muerto was "at a standstill" and that it remains in development. A Sony representative declined to comment on the situation.

Will Sony's El Muerto Release Date Be Delayed?

El Muerto

Aside from the movie's Jan. 12, 2024 release date, the only known details about El Muerto are the film's creative team. Jonás Cuarón will direct while Garreth Dunnet-Alcocer was hired to pen the screenplay. Since the initial El Muerto announcement, there have been no significant updates over the last year. At this point, it's almost a guarantee that the Spider-Man offshoot will be delayed.

El Muerto is supposed to arrive in less than a year, and if filming hasn't started, they won't make that deadline. Even if principal photography is short, there is still post-production work that would need to be done. Unless Sony Pictures rush it, El Muerto is bound to be pushed back. A delay could also benefit Sony's Madame Web movie, which releases only a month after El Muerto.

It's possible that Sony is re-evaluating its plans for El Muerto. Given the mixed response to the 2022 announcement, it wouldn't be shocking if they scrap it altogether. Time will tell how El Muerto fits into Sony's Spider-Man Universe plans, if the movie happens at all.
