Sony is reworking the script for Silver & Black and have hired Captain Marvel and Chaos Walking scribes to do so. Sony is looking to capitalize on the revitalized interest in Spider-Man, but they are doing their own thing without Marvel Studios' supervision. Whether or not these movies do connect to the MCU remains to be seen, but Venom kicks things off later this year - and the Venom trailer wasn't a huge hit.
That is hardly the only project the studio is developing, with an all-female team-up movie starring Silver Sable and Black Cat up next. Gina Prince-Bythewood is set to direct the movie, which is due to start production next month. How firm that start date is isn't clear, but the hiring of two more writers could point to a potential delay.
THR reports Sony has hired Captain Marvel writer Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Chaos Walking writer Lindsey Beer to pen the latest draft of the script. The move comes after Prince-Bythewood wrote an early draft herself, followed by Chris Yost and Lisa Joy taking a pass. Robertson-Dworet also worked on the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot, while Beer has spent plenty of time in big writer's rooms for Transformers, Quentin Tarantino's Star Trek, and more.
Update: Beer commented on the report on Twitter, saying she and Robertson-Dworet have already finished their draft of the script and it's been given to Prince-Bythewood for a polish.
The addition of Robertson-Dworet and Beer at this stage could mean a number of things for the film's status. Since there are no details on what exactly their contributions will be, it isn't clear if they'll just punch up the script or do a full rewrite. If Silver & Black really is going to start production in Mexico soon, their hirings could just be a move from Sony to fine tune the script before production begins. However, there's also the possibility that they are being brought on to do a more extensive pass on the script, one that could delay production.
Even though both options are possible, the latter may be more likely. Sony has been busy assembling the crew for Silver & Black, but there's a few major pieces still needed to start production - most notably the stars. There's been no word on casting for either of the two female leads, let alone the several supporting characters and villains rumored to be involved. That said, the hiring of these two new female writers could be a move made to rework part of the script now that Sony is closing in on casting. That's merely speculation at this point, but could prove to be true if Sony starts making casting announcements in the coming weeks.
