Sony just launched a new PS5 website, which could mean there is a big announcement from the company coming soon. The system is already set to release during the holidays later this year, but a concrete date has not been confirmed. More than that though, Sony has released very few details concerning the system and most of what people have to go on are leaked patents or rumors.
At the moment there is no true confirmation on what the system actually looks like either. Last year there were leaked devkit images that made the rounds, but it was difficult to tell if they were real images or not. Sony seemingly confirmed the leaks were authentic, but consoles very rarely look like the devkit anyway. There have also been several patents filed that suggest features that will be coming to the DualShock 5 controller. One of the patents implies that the DualShock 5 will support voice commands, whereas another makes it seem like Sony is adding two new buttons to the underside of the controller.
According to Mobile Syrup, the PS5 website was first able to be accessed by Germans and Canadians. Initially the website gave Americans a 404 error, but it is now up and running for any users that live in the United States. The website can be accessed here. Users were able to sign up on the website to receive news updates concerning the PS5, but it seems that Sony has already removed that functionality from the site. Other than the PS5 logo, the only text on the site currently reads, "We've begun to share some of the incredible features you can expect from PlayStation 5, but we're not quite ready to fully unveil the next generation of PlayStation. Sign up below to be among the first to receive updates as we announce them, including news on the PS5 release date, PS5 price and the upcoming roster of PS5 launch games."
At this time it is unclear if the website launched early or if Sony intentionally decided to create it silently. Either way though this makes it seems as though Sony is planning to announce something regarding the system soon. It would make sense for the company to do a some kind of unveiling during February, as that was when the PS4 was revealed in 2013. Sony has not acknowledged the PS5 website at this time, and has not officially announced when a PS5 launch event will take place.
Sony's PlayStation consoles are the clear front runner in its competition with Microsoft right now. Last generation was a much tighter race on account of PlayStation's shoddy network security and Xbox's IPs. Now, as the the technology has become more similar, PlayStation has pulled ahead with its much more impressive exclusive titles. Now that these systems are reaching the end of a generation the gaming community must again wonder which system will come out on top. Sony's unveiling of the PS5 will give everyone a better idea as to what the competition will look like.
The PlayStation 5 is set to release during the Holidays of 2020.
