Sony’s Tom Rothman has confirmed that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will return for another MCU crossover. Holland’s iteration of Peter Parker is currently gearing up for his latest solo outing with the premiere of Spider-Man: No Way Home. The film’s Hollywood premiere is tonight, with the film opening wide this coming weekend.

Holland’s Spider-Man has been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since his introduction in Captain America: Civil War. The character’s presence in the MCU has long been contingent on a delicate partnership between Marvel Studios and Sony to share him between the Marvel-produced ensemble movies and the Sony-produced solo movies. With the current Holland-fronted Spider-Man trilogy coming to a close, that has left some fans wondering exactly what the future may hold for Holland in the MCU.

Now, with Spider-Man: No Way Home premiering in Hollywood, some new information has been revealed about the future of Holland’s Spider-Man in the MCU. Speaking with the Phase Zero podcast at the No Way Home premiere in Los Angeles, Sony Pictures’ Tom Rothman explained that, based on the current partnership between Sony and Marvel, there is still at least one MCU crossover that would bring Holland into the orbit of the other Marvel characters. Rothman said:

We lend one, then they lend one, and that's how Benedict is in this movie, so we have one more lend back that is committed.

Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) plays a pivotal role in kicking off the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, and his presence in the movie is possible due to the nature of the partnership between the studios. Of course, while there is only one “committed” crossover confirmed at this time, that doesn’t inherently mean that the deal will end with that final crossover. As Rothman pointed out in his remarks, both studios value the partnership, and there is always the possibility that they could negotiate new terms and find ways to maintain Holland’s presence in the MCU films while also navigating his own Sony-owned Spider-Man franchise.

With all of that said, it is arguably somewhat difficult to imagine a scenario in which Sony flat out refuses to continue sharing Holland’s Spider-Man with the MCU. These crossovers have become incredibly popular among fans, and the Sony/Marvel partnership appears beneficial to all parties at this time. There is no way to know exactly what the future holds for the silver screen Spider-Man beyond the next planned crossover with the MCU, but there’s no denying that the future seems incredibly bright for Holland and Peter Parker as box office giants. Spider-Man: No Way Home premieres in theaters on December 17.
