Sons of Anarchy followed the journey of Jax Teller, but how old was he at the beginning and end of the series? Created by Kurt Sutter, Sons of Anarchy debuted on FX in 2008 and came to an end in 2014 after seven seasons. The series was very well received from the beginning, with critics praising the story, tone, and the performances of the main cast, particularly that of Katey Sagal as Gemma Teller, Jax’s mother.

Sons of Anarchy tells the story of Jackson “Jax” Teller (Charlie Hunnam), VP of the motorcycle club Sons of Anarchy in the fictional town of Charming, in California. It all begins with Jax finding a manifesto written by his late father, John Teller, one of the founding members of the club, which leads Jax to question the club’s motivations and path, his relationships, family, and himself. The Jax Teller viewers met in the first season wasn’t the same seen in the final episodes, as he went through a very intense journey in all aspects of his life, which might make viewers believe that he was older than he actually was.

Calculating Jax’s age can be confusing as he and the club were sent to jail a few times throughout the series, and in some cases, their sentences were reduced, so keeping up with the timeline can be tricky. However, the first season is set in the same year it was released, and Jax’s year of birth is casually mentioned in the first episodes, making it easy to know how old he was. Jax was born in 1978, so he was 30 years old in Sons of Anarchy season 1, and after that is when the timeline can get confusing, but Jax’s age by the end of the series can be calculated thanks to his first son, Abel.

In the very first episode of Sons of Anarchy, Jax became a father, but his relationship with his then-wife Wendy (Drea De Matteo) was not good, as she was a drug addict who kept using through her pregnancy. The birth of his son and his health complications were also triggering for Jax, and as “family” is one of the most important topics in the series, Abel was often in the middle of every decision Jax took, as he only wanted the best for his family. Tracking the ages of the characters, especially those of Abel and Thomas (Jax and Tara’s son), can be confusing as the information doesn’t seem to match, but in season 7 it’s mentioned that Thomas was now five-years-old, meaning that by the end of Sons of Anarchy, Jax was 35.

Viewers saw Jax go from VP of the Sons of Anarchy MC and a man struggling with his past and present to the President of the club and a man looking for revenge following the death of his wife, only to be met with betrayal from his own family. After everything he went through, it’s easy to believe that Jax was a lot older or that many more years passed between seasons of Sons of Anarchy, but he was just a young man who had to grow up really fast, even before the events of the series.
