Despite the rocky start to its marketing, Sonic The Hedgehog was a massive success. And even despite the global pandemic, there's a quick turnaround with the sequel, which is coming just two years after the first movie. Sonic The Hedgehog 2 is scheduled for release in 2022, but not much is known about the follow-up.

There's a ton of source material that the movie could be based on, whether it's video games, TV shows, or Comic Books. This means there are hoards of fans that have their own idea on the direction the movie should go in. Between using the games' music, setting the movie in Mobius, and even being a crossover with Mario, Redditors have some imaginative ideas for the sequel.

It Shouldn´t Be A Road Trip Movie

The first movie in the series was a road trip movie that saw Tom and Sonic drive through middle America all the way to San Francisco. Not everyone was a fan of the premise, as, talking about a sequel, a deleted user mentions that they "hope it's not a boring road trip movie."

In fairness, the idea of Sonic The Hedgehog being a road trip movie doesn't make the tiniest bit of sense, as Sonic can run faster than sports cars. The hedgehog must have been bored stiff sitting in the passenger seat for hours when he could have simply gotten to SF in minutes.

It Should Be More Faithful To The Games

Sonic The Hedgehog was a huge success in 2020, and even though it wasn't the most faithful to the games, fans of the franchise still loved it. However, Reddit user, eltrotter, argues that the film should be set in "the colorful cartoon world of Mobius" - the world that Sonic is from.

The hedgehog's world is full of fascinating characters and the locations are so well designed. The short glimpse audiences got of it in the first movie looked spectacular. So it would be great to see more of that. However, that would set the film back when it comes to its budget, as a completely CGI movie on this scale could cost close to $200 million, so it's unlikely that it'd ever happen.

It Should Have Super Sonic

In response to rumors of the plot surfacing online, Reddit user, Xytal, states that "as long as I get Super Sonic, I don´t care. I'm in." Super Sonic was introduced as a playable character in Sonic The Hedgehog 2 once players collected all seven Chaos Emeralds in the Special Stages.

There isn't much difference between the two hedgehogs, but Super Sonic is yellow and can even run quicker than the original Sonic. It'd be more fan service than anything else if the character does show up, but it'd still be exciting to see this character come to life on-screen.

Metal Sonic Should Show Up Too

Reddit user, evenios, doesn´t have much to say other than the fact that "it better have Metal Sonic," and just like Super Sonic, it'd be mostly fan service. However, Metal Sonic is interesting because it was created by Dr. Robotnik and was used as a weapon against Sonic.

Metal Sonic is essentially the Mecha-Godzilla of the Sonic universe, and the character/weapon would be a lot more fun and thrilling than the drones that Robotnik used in the first movie. Metal Knuckles is an obscure character that also needs to make a comeback, but it's Metal Sonic that would be the most satisfying for fans to see.

The Trailer For The Sequel Should Have The Old Botched Design

The original design of Sonic in the first Sonic the Hedgehog trailer

The botched first trailer for Sonic The Hedgehog made headlines for all the wrong reasons. Instead of people excitedly talking about it, Sonic's strange design was overwhelmingly negatively received and it looked so bad that it could have been mistaken for a joke. Reddit user, Wuchtelmesser, thinks that Paramount "should release a trailer using the old botched design."

To be fair, a trailer with his old design would be hilarious, and it wouldn't be out of the ordinary for Paramount to do something like that. The approach the studio has taken with marketing the movie has been the work of a prankster. In early February this year, Paramount jokingly announced that they'd be revealing the title for the sequel soon, and a week later that name was revealed, Sonic The Hedgehog 2.

It Needs More Of The Game's Music

The intro to the Sonic the Hedgehog video game

The Sonic games are full of great music, and even the latest video games that weren't as well-received have brilliant soundtracks too. But strangely enough, despite Paramount having a well of unique and nostalgic music at its fingertips, the movie had a soundtrack full of pop music.

Redditor starwarsforpresident and many others think that the follow-up movie should avoid the same mistake and instead use music from the games. Although the first movie was aimed at kids, audiences were surely full of avid gamers who were fans of the games when they were young. So using the games´ music would be more gratifying for viewers, and it would save the studio thousands in loyalty fees too.

It Needs To Feature Casino Night Zone

One of the unique parts of the video games is all of the fascinating and creative worlds. Almost none of them were seen in the first movie, but the sequel could change that.

A fan-favorite level in the first game is Casino Night Zone, and regarding the sequel, this Redditor simply states "Casino Night Zone or bust!" Between the funky music, the maze of slot machines, and all of the hidden rooms, seeing the level on the big-screen would give the bar scene in the first movie a run for its money.

It Should Start A Cinematic Universe

There's currently an animated Super Mario movie in production and Paramount having a clear plan to continue the Sonic series in the future. This has led to Redditor, DoIrllyneeda_username, wanting a shared universe with the two video game characters, hoping it leading to "an Olympic Games film."

It's a huge stretch, as Sonic is owned by SEGA and Mario is owned by Nintendo. Not only that but Paramount owns the licensing rights to the hedgehog and Illumination owns the licensing rights to Mario. So it'd take a lot for the two to come together.

It Should Be Followed Up With An R-rated Shadow Movie

Shadow the Hedgehog

Where an R-rating was simply a guide for parents to understand whether a movie was suitable for their children, it has now become a selling point and a way to market a movie. Studios now promise fans that movies will be R-rated, with the most obvious example being Deadpool 3. Now Reddit user ScentedGoat wants an "R-rated Shadow movie."

Shadow is a darker version of the hedgehog, literally and tonally, and some Redditors think Shadow is the best character. Although there's a good chance that the Redditor could be being sarcastic, a Shadow movie isn't too outside of the realm of possibility, as many fans of Sonic are in their 20s and 30s.
