Update: Paramount tell us this is not accurate however, we understand that he potentially of interest at one point.
Ant-Man and the Wasp star Paul Rudd may play a lead role in the live-action/CGI film adaption of the video game series, Sonic the Hedgehog. The movie is set to begin filming this summer in Vancouver and has a 2019 release date.
Sonic the Hedgehog has starred in dozens of titles since his creation in 1991. The games that first made Sonic popular were side-scrolling adventures that focused on Sonic's super speed. Sonic quickly became SEGA's flagship character. In the years that have followed, Sonic has developed a strong fanbase and a stable of supporting characters including Knuckles, Tails, and Shadow the Hedgehog. Sonic and his friends currently star in an animated series titled Sonic Boom.
That Hashtag Show reports that Paul Rudd is being eyed for a lead role in the upcoming film. Rudd is expected to play Tom, "a cop who befriends Sonic and will likely team up to defeat the evil Robotnik." Directed by Oscar-nominated animator/filmmaker Jeff Fowler and based on a script from Patrick Casey and Josh Miller, Sonic the Hedgehog was originally being produced by Sony but is now in development at Paramount Pictures. The film has a budget of $90 million.
The plot has been kept under wraps, but if this report from That Hashtag Show is correct, the villain of the film will be Robotnik, also known to fans as Dr. Eggman. This development wouldn't be too surprising, as Eggman is generally the main antagonist in Sonic games and cartoons. Eggman is a scientist who uses his robotic creations to fight Sonic and his friends. His plans for world domination are consistently foiled by Sonic.
Rudd's casting could be seen as a good fit, considering the actor's comedic chops. He had appeared in several comedies before his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Scott Lang, a down-on-his-luck cat burglar who unwittingly becomes a superhero in Ant-Man. The character reprised the role in Captain America: Civil War and will return to star in Ant-Man and the Wasp.
As filming on Sonic the Hedgehog will begin soon, fans can expect to hear more casting news in the coming weeks. So far, no actors have been officially cast. It's possible that the film will feature multiple human characters apart from Rudd's Tom and Robotnik. Fans are also awaiting an announcement on who will voice the titular hero.
