The updated design of Sonic for the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie may have been revealed. Sonic made his first appearance in the 1991 Sega video game Sonic the Hedgehog, but the character has also appeared in several other video games, comics, and animated TV shows over the year. Now after 30 years since the character was created, Paramount Pictures is preparing to bring the character to the big screen for his first-ever live-action appearance.

Marketing material for Sonic movie has been in short supply ever since the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog was released. Upon the release of the trailer, the design of Sonic was ripped apart by fans. The entire design for Sonic had been criticized, including his long legs, widely separated eyes, and his terrifying teeth. Even the song choice, Gangsta's Paradise by Coolio, seemed like a weird decision for the trailer and longtime fans of the character were not happy. The internet quickly blew up with people making fun of Sonic, so much so that Paramount decided to delay Sonic the Hedgehog to redesign the character. Now, fans may have their first look at the updated character.

The possible first look at the redesigned character comes from Tails' Channela Sonic fan page on Twitter. Tails' Channel shared an image of what looks like a movie standee at an unknown movie theater. The full tweet can be seen below:

Little has been heard about the Sonic the Hedgehog movie since the film was delayed from November 2019 to February 2020. Producer Tim Miller has said that "fans will be pleased" with Sonic's redesign, which is hopefully the case since Sonic's creator Yuji Naka was even disappointed with the live-action design. While most people have been all for the decision to redesign the character, Jim Carrey has previously commented that he didn't like, "the audience being in on the creation" and felt that fans shouldn't have “a sense of ownership from their childhood.

If this is in fact the new design for Sonic, fans will likely be much more excited about the upcoming film. The two main improvements this look has over the design in the trailer are Sonic's eyes and legs. Sonic's appendages are now much shorter with enlarged hands and feet, while his eyes now closely resemble the design from the video games. If this turns out to not actually be a real standee from Sonic the Hedgehog, hopefully Paramount did as good of a job.
