A Sonic the Hedgehog leaked image reveals fans' first look at Jim Carrey as Doctor Ivo 'Eggman' Robotnik ahead of the film's first trailer. As Hollywood continues trying to break the video game movie curse, multiple such adaptations are poised to hit theaters in 2019. The first high-profile video game adaptation is Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, but another is Sonic the Hedgehog. The movie is based on the Sega franchise of the same name that kicked off in the 90s, following the titular hedgehog as he raced through various levels of the platform game.

The Sonic the Hedgehog live-action movie has been in development for many years, but took a significant step forward in 2017 when Paramount Pictures acquired the rights to the Sonic project. In the months since, Paramount set Jeff Fowler to direct Sonic the Hedgehog, and cast James Marsden in the live-action lead role, as Green Hills Sheriff Tom Wachowski. Meanwhile, Ben Schwartz will voice Sonic, who will be brought to life through CGI. Earlier this month, Paramount screened Sonic the Hedgehog footage at CinemaCon, including the first trailer and first looks at most of the main cast. Now, a shot of Sonic's foe Robotnik has leaked ahead of the trailer's release.

On Twitter, SEGAbits posted an image of Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, featuring the character's trademark red getup, goggles and handlebar mustache. Further, SEGAbits reports the first Sonic the Hedgehog trailer will debut Tuesday April 30th. Though Paramount hasn't confirmed the legitimacy of the image or trailer release date, those in attendance at the Sonic CinemaCon presentation confirmed the image is accurate. See the Sonic the Hedgehog image of Robotnik below.

So far, only a Sonic the Hedgehog motion poster has been officially released, showing the character in silhouette in his starter pose. However, last year a Sonic poster drew divisive reactions from fans after revealing what was deemed a creepy first look at the character's legs. Additional leaked images of Sonic the Hedgehog in full color weren't well received either, and the response to the film's CinemaCon footage was mixed, though it seemed viewers in attendance had a better idea of the tone and look/feel the movie is aiming for.

There's not much we can tell from the image of Carrey's Robotnik in terms of what his performance will be like in the final film. His costume and mustache certainly fall in line with the character's portrayal in the game - though, of course, Carrey is sporting a full head of hair. Not to worry, though, the CinemaCon footage did include a shot of Carrey as a bald Robotnik, indicating viewers will get to see him transform into the Sonic villain. Still, those wondering what exactly to expect from Sonic the Hedghog when it hits theaters later this year will no doubt be keen to see the first trailer. Thankfully, it seems they won't need to wait too long for that first Sonic the Hedgehog trailer as it may drop tomorrow.
