Ride Along star Tika Sumpter is ready to go for a different kind of spin, taking on the female lead in Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Westworld's James Marsden has already been cast as the movie's male lead, emerging from a short-listed pack that reportedly included Jack Black, Jason Segel, Owen Wilson and Ed Helms.
Originally billed as the manic counterpart to Super Mario Bros., the 2D platformer Sonic the Hedgehog debuted in 1991 on the Sega Genesis video game system. Many sequels would follow, as well as TV, comic book and manga adaptations. Talk of a Sonic movie first emerged in 2014, and plans later crystallized at Paramount for a live-action/CG hybrid adaptation, with Jeff Fowler named to direct.
With Sonic the Hedgehog now careening forward at Paramount, the studio has reportedly tapped Tika Sumpter to play the female lead (via Variety). No details have yet emerged about the character. Sumpter will star opposite James Marsden who reportedly plays a human cop named Tom who aids a computer-generated Sonic on his adventures.
Tika Sumpter is best known for playing Angela Payton in the Ice Cube-Kevin Hart action-comedy Ride Along and its sequel Ride Along 2. She has also reportedly signed on for Ride Along 3, with Ice Cube and Kevin Hart also returning. The actress also appeared in the Anna Faris-Chris Evans vehicle What's Your Number? and the Tyler Perry comedy A Madea Christmas and had a starring role as a young Michelle Obama in Southside With You. On television, Sumpter enjoyed long runs on the soap opera One Life to Live as well as the Tyler Perry-produced The Haves and the Have Nots. She will next be seen in the Robert Redford drama The Old Man & the Gun. The actress also has a starring role in the drama The Pages alongside Jamie Lee Curtis.
What kind of movie will Sonic the Hedgehog ultimately prove to be? Plot details remain under wraps at this time. With the casting of James Marsden and Tika Sumpter, two versatile performers who have done a lot of different things, producers have at least given themselves some latitude when it comes to tone. Had they cast a more comic actor like Jack Black or Ed Helms in the lead, they arguably would have locked themselves in to making a broader, sillier film. The games of course are silly and over-the-top inherently, with their fantasy settings, frantic action and cartoon-style characters.
