Tails actress Colleen O'Shaughnessey shares a Sonic the Hedgehog 3 update, revealing she's in the dark on development of the video game threequel. O'Shaughnessey has been the voice of the titular speedster's friend and ally since the 2014 animated series Sonic Boom, having previously joined the franchise with 2010's Sonic Colors in which she voiced Charmy Bee. The voice actress reprised her role of Tails for the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie in which she appeared in the post-credits as Tails arrived on Earth in the hopes of finding the blue hero.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 sees Tails finally meeting up with the titular hero and partnering with him to stop Doctor Eggman and Knuckles the Echidna from finding the powerful Master Emerald and using it to wipe out the world. Alongside O'Shaughnessey, the sequel sees the returns of Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Jim Carrey as Eggman, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally and Lee Madjoub and the franchise introductions of Idris Elba as Knuckles and Shemar Moore. With the first film proving to be a critical and commercial success and reviews for the sequel remaining strong, Paramount Pictures is already building up its franchise potential as both Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and a Knuckles spinoff show are in the works.

In anticipation of the film's release, Collider caught up with Colleen O'Shaughnessey to discuss Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and her future in the movie franchise. The Tails actress revealed she doesn't know of the plans for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 but is eager to reprise her role as the beloved fox sidekick. See what O'Shaughnessey shared below:

“They’ve told me nothing. [Laughs] I know nothing, other that it’s in development, so we’ll see!”

O'Shaughnessey isn't the only creative with the Sonic the Hedgehog movie franchise to be in the dark on what's to come with the threequel. Director Jeff Fowler recently echoed the Tails actress' statement regarding Sonic the Hedgehog 3, revealing he wasn't officially involved with any of the follow-up projects "yet" but expressing his hope to come back and being proud of the new film. Despite their lack of proper involvement, Fowler and Schwartz have teased plans for the third film, saying it could explore further lore and references from the video game franchise.

With Tails now a part of Sonic's world in the movies, it would seem pretty surprising to not see the double-tailed fox return for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and an even odder decision for the character to no longer be voiced by O'Shaughnessey. However, between the first film's success and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 receiving better reviews than its predecessor and box office projections putting it in line with the original, it seems likely Paramount will keep the ball rolling with the same creative team behind the stories thus far. Audiences can catch up with Tails' first proper adventure on the big screen with Sonic the Hedgehog 2 now in theaters.
