Tails is set up to play a big role in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, but who sent him to Earth? Paramount launched a new live-action/CGI hybrid franchise based on the famous blue hedgehog in early 2020. Sonic the Hedgehog features Sonic (Ben Schwartz) living on Earth in secret until humans discover his super-speed. Sonic works with a small-town cop Tom (James Marsden) to retrieve his magic teleporting golden rings so he can avoid capture by Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey).
By the end of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic and Tom managed to defeat Robotnik, but that wasn't the end of the story. A post-credits scene for Sonic showed Tails, the titular hedgehog's best friend from the video games, arriving on Earth and searching for the Blue Blur. This scene sets up a sequel that is officially on the way. Paramount has scheduled a 2022 release date for Sonic the Hedgehog 2. After this post-credits scene, the sequel will have to explain Tails' search for Sonic. But, it can also answer a lingering question from the first film: who sent Tails to Earth?
The post-credits scene for Sonic the Hedgehog didn't provide many clues when it comes to answering this question. Tails' introduction sees him step out of a portal and reveal that he has a device that will help him locate Sonic. But, it isn't clear who gave him this mission or the tracking device. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will likely add more details behind Tails' arrival, possibly even revealing who sent him on this chase. One of the most popular suggestions is that his guardian owl Longclaw is behind Tails' search. The opening of the first film teased her death, but audiences weren't shown what happened after the portal closed. It's possible she is still alive, and possibly free, and has sent Tails to find Sonic for her.
The idea of Longclaw playing a part in connecting Tails and Sonic would work, especially since it isn't known if the two already have a past. That appears to be unlikely based on what Sonic the Hedgehog showed, but the sequel could just as easily change this. Perhaps Tails and Sonic were raised together by Longclaw at one point, which would give the characters a life-long connection that can be rekindled in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The history between them could add another possibility to the mix, though, as Tails might be looking for Sonic on his own after all this time.
Revealing who sent Tails to Earth is just one part of Sonic the Hedgehog's post-credits scene that the sequel needs to address. As exciting as Tails' "live-action" debut was for fans of the games, his arrival was a bit ominous. The flying fox says, "I just hope I'm not too late," right after confirming that he's found Sonic on Earth. However, it isn't explained what Tails is referring to. Is this a tease of a threat coming to Earth that Sonic and Tails will have to face together, or was he trying to get to Earth to help Sonic face Robotnik the first time? The answer to this question and the circumstances that led Tails to Earth can only be answered in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
