Tails is teased at the very end of Sonic The Hedgehog, but who should voice the character in Sonic the Hedgehog 2? The movie follows Sonic (Ben Schwartz) as he crosses over into our universe and teams up with Sheriff Wachowski (James Marsden) to stop Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). It's fun to see Sonic finally get his own movie, but a human cop is far from Sonic's most iconic sidekick.
Miles "Tails" Prower is one of the oldest Sonic characters, and in some ways, Tails is the Robin to Sonic's Batman. With his technical prowess and ability to fly, Tails is a young two-tailed fox who helps Sonic. If and when a Sonic sequel is greenlit, it would be great to introduce Tails as a main character with a big name voice actor to match.
SEGA knows the value and importance of Tails, which is why he is teased in Sonic the Hedgehog. In the second of Sonic's two post-credit scenes, Tails comes out of a portal and surveys the world. Tails is voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey in this quick scene. O'Shaughnessey is the voice actor for Tails in the modern Sonic games, as well as in the cartoon series Sonic Boom. O'Shaughnessey is a talented actress to be sure, but it's possible Paramount will choose a bigger name for the character in the sequel, like hiring Shwartz over video game voice actor Roger Craig Smith. There are plenty of great prominent actors and actresses who could play Tails. Since Tails is a younger character, Paramount will likely want an actor who can conceivably voice a child. Ben Schwartz talks about how his version of Sonic is a teenager, so whoever plays Tails will likely need a similar voice. Here are some great actors who could nail the role of Tails.
Gaten Matarazzo
Matarazzo is one of the young stars from the instant hit Netflix series Stranger Things, which kickstarted the movie careers of fellow child actors Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolfhard. But at this point, the only feature film Matarazzo has been in is The Angry Birds Movie 2. Matarazzo kills the role of Dustin, one of the dorkier characters in Stranger Things. Matarazzo deserves a meatier movie role, and since Tails could be a great fit for the right child actor, a spot in Sonic 2 is perfect. He nails the role of an earnest nerd who wants to help save the world. He even has experience teaming up with Ben Schwartz lookalike Joe Keery. A lot of Tails's key character traits are embodied in Dustin, so Matarazzo could easily step into the role in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
Thomas Middleditch
Thomas Middleditch stars in a plethora of movies and TV shows. He is probably most known for his role as Richard Hendricks in Silicon Valley, and he also plays the rabble-rousing Harold in Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie. While Harold stirs up more trouble than Tails, it's the exact kind of voice that would fit Tails. Middleditch nails the joyous youngster energy that the actor voicing Tails needs.
Along with his acting skills, one thing that sets Middleditch above other possible actors is his chemistry with Ben Schwartz. Middleditch is Schwartz's friend and improv partner with a touring two-person show. The two gel really well together, so watching that dynamic translate to the colorful SEGA characters could be an instant win for Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
Alison Brie
An actress who could do a great job voicing Tails in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is Alison Brie. Brie has starred in multiple animated masterpieces, including The Lego Movie and BoJack Horseman. She also played the hilarious and earnest nerd Annie Edison in the celebrated sitcom Community. Brie has even worked in a couple of video games - as her Lego Movie character Unikitty in Lego Dimensions and as Black Widow in Marvel Avengers Academy.
So many characters that Brie has played possess the same passion and smarts as Tails. From the endless optimism of Annie Edison to the drive and innovation of Ruth Wilder in G.L.O.W, Brie has shown she can play a variety of roles with equal enthusiasm. Brie could definitely match the charisma and speed of Ben Schwartz's Sonic.
Zach Callison
Callison is a young actor who is probably most known for his work in Steven Universe. The incredible animated series recently wrapped up with a movie and limited series Steven Universe Future. Callison has also appeared in series like The Goldbergs and Sofia the First.
He's a talented young actor, and now that he's done with Steven Universe, that opens him up for many other projects. Callison has proven he deserves starring roles with his powerful work with the beloved long-running cartoon. Steven Universe isn’t his only experience by any means, but it’s the only one that has given him his high profile. Callison is an absolute star, and it’s that kind of talent that Sonic 2's Tails could use.
Kate Micucci
Kate Micucci is a talented actress, improviser, and musician. Micucci has worked with Ben Schwartz on the Ducktales reboot series as Webby. She also plays Sadie in Steven Universe and Clayface in The Lego Batman Movie. While Micucci is fantastic, she's often a part of the ensemble cast or background character, as opposed to a star. Anyone who's seen her musical duo with Riki Lindhome Garfunkel and Oates or Micucci's episodes of Netflix's Easy know that she can slay a starring role when given the opportunity. Like the other actors on this list, Micucci has a history of playing characters who are brilliant and eager to help save the day. Micucci is a talented actress who deserves more big movie roles like Miles Prower in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
William Jackson Harper
William Jackson Harper rose to prominence as Chidi Anagonye in The Good Place. Chidi is the delightful and constantly overwhelmed scholar who falls in love with Kristen Bell's Eleanor over the course of the series. Harper also stars in brilliant movies like Midsommar and Dark Waters. Harper is a great actor who's never had a role quite like Tails, and it would be incredible to see what he could do with the character in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
He doesn't necessarily have the same high-register voice as other actors on this list, but that doesn't make him any less deserving of the role. Maybe a different take on the character is exactly what Tails needs to get fans excited for a sequel appearance.
Kristen Schaal
Schaal is another incredible actress in both live-action and animated projects. Schaal is phenomenal as Mabel Pines in Gravity Falls and Louise Belcher in Bob's Burgers. Schaal has loads of experience in animation with a wide variety of iconic characters. She's a known name who could bring this big-screen iteration of Tails to life. Schaal is fantastic, adding a level of energy and joy to every project she's part of. She could become an instant classic Tails voice actress with her unique voice and range. She's a proven asset to any project she's in, and a Sonic the Hedgehog sequel would be no exception.
