Sonic the Hedgehog 2 director Jeff Fowler announces the movie has wrapped filming. Next year, the sequel to 2020's surprise hit races into theaters. Although no plot details have been shared, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 set photos revealed the stand-ins for Tails and Knuckles, teasing the movie's story.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is in a pretty good place when it comes to pre-release anticipation. The first film more than impressed at the box office. Domestically, it is the highest-grossing movie based on a video game property. It's interesting to think about where the franchise would be if Paramount hadn't delayed it in order to redesign the title character. Besides Sonic's updated design, audiences lauded Jim Carrey's portrayal of Dr. Robotnik. Something audiences are likely keeping in mind is Fowler said Sonic the Hedgehog didn't include Super Sonic or the Chaos Emeralds in order to make nailing the relationship between Sonic and Robotnik the focus. With that done, it will be interesting seeing how big the sequel goes.

Over on Twitter, Fowler revealed Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has finished filming in Vancouver. In his message, the director teases the sequel as "truly special" and "epic." Check out the tweet below.

Production on Sonic the Hedgehog 2 officially commenced in March. Of course, filming with the actors is done, but now comes animating the CGI characters. Considering Sonic should be appearing frequently, animating is the part that will take a little while. Interestingly, Fowler is sitting next to large mushrooms in the photo. At the end of the first Sonic film, Robotnik is seen on a mushroom planet and is sporting a more games-accurate look. It looks like the mushroom planet will make another appearance in the sequel.

The biggest question is what exactly will happen in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. When Knuckles first appeared in the games, he was being tricked by Eggman to fight Sonic and Tails. Perhaps something similar will happen in the film. Additionally, in the early games, Eggman built the Death Egg fortress. It would be truly a sight if the upcoming movie had it. Metal Sonic would make for an entertaining final battle. Interestingly, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 set photos also revealed what appeared to be GUN vehicles. GUN is a military organization in the games starting in Sonic Adventure 2. Sonic Adventure 2 is one of the most important games in the series, introducing Shadow the Hedgehog. It would be interesting if the film sequel were to implement Shadow's story, although the chances probably aren't the highest, given the movie is already exploring Tails and Knuckles. Perhaps as a post-credits scene, though, there's nothing else that would get audiences as excited for a third installment.
