Sonic the Hedgehog may be one-of-a-kind, but a new mod for Sonic Generations allows players to take control of an entire squad of the Blue Blur as they blast through waves of Badnicks. Released in 2011 to commemorate Sonic’s 20 anniversary, Sonic Generations sees Sega’s hyper-fast mascot team up with a younger version of himself to race through remixed versions of some of the greatest levels in the series and stop the nefarious Dr. Eggman from altering the course of history.

Even a full decade after Sonic Generations blasted across the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 era, there is still a surprisingly passionate modding community tweaking the milestone platformer in a variety of interesting ways. One particularly noteworthy example is Unleashed Project, which serves as a makeshift PC port for 2008’s Sonic Unleashed that allows players to run through that title's lauded daytime running levels with Sonic Generations’ Boost gameplay. Other Sonic-related mods include a nausea-inducing first-person view of the speedy hedgehog as he runs through the famous Green Hill Zone and a playable version of Doom housed within 2017’s Sonic Mania.

Twitter user and Sonic modder Skyth recently shared a brief clip of a mod that gives players control of an entire team of Sonic clones in Sonic Generations (via Game Rant). These speedy hedgehog copies form a ring around the main Sonic as he boosts through a level, with all of their speed trails producing a loud, thunderous, bass-boosting noise that Skyth warns viewers about in their Twitter post. While Skyth comments that they are done uploading clips of their Sonic Generations mods for the time being, fans in the comment section continue to post jokes and memes about how Sonic and his army of doppelgangers are racing to see the upcoming Sonic The Hedgehog 2 in theaters, or wondering what kind of sonic boom the 18 super-fast hedgehogs could produce.

While fans continue to modify past Sonic titles, Sega is getting ready to launch the Blue Blur’s next big adventure with the upcoming Sonic Frontiers. This new platformer was recently revealed at The Game Awards 2021 with a promising trailer that sees Sonic race through an open world environment similar to the ones from The Legend Of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Kirby & The Forgotten Land. Not much is known yet about Sonic Frontiers’ plot except that it is penned by longtime Sonic comic scribe Ian Flynn, but a recent leak suggests that the game could launch sometime in November.

In the meantime, modders keep making impressive changes to Sonic Generations, whether it involves recreating a past Sonic the Hedgehog title or giving the Blue Blur an entire army of hypersonic clones. Dr. Eggman might wish to reconsider whatever evil plan he’s cooked up this week, seeing as he now has a whopping 18 speed-driven hedgehogs ready to stop him with the supersonic power of teamwork.
