On Friday, September 17, developer HARDlight will host a special event to honor Sonic Dash's newest milestone of 500 million downloads. An endless runner mobile game, Sonic Dash originally launched in 2013 as an experience allowing players to dash, spin, and jump their way through gorgeous 3D environments as the iconic blue speedster.

The mobile title has since become a roaring success for Sega and HARDlight, raking in over $10 million in revenue as of July 2020. Within six years, then, Sonic Dash managed to accumulate more revenue than all of Sonic's previous five mobile games combined. (Notably, this metric didn't take Sonic Racing into consideration due to its inclusion in Apple Arcade subscriptions.) Regardless of the finer details, the beloved hedgehog's mobile adventures remain nothing short of a boon for Sega as a whole. And while Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom's 2015 release garnered a considerable amount of success in its own right, something about the original keeps enticing more players to join the fun.

HARDlight often deploys updates for Sonic Dash with in-game events that players don't want to miss. Come Friday, September 17, users can expect the mobile title to receive a "special event" honoring the game's latest milestone of 500 million downloads to date. The press release announcing the celebratory update and download figures doesn't offer much in the way of concrete details, though. At the very least, fans don't have to wait too long to see what Sonic Dash's special event may entail.

The wildly successful endless runner from HARDlight reached this impressive milestone amid ongoing celebrations for Sonic the Hedgehog's 30th anniversary. Sega kicked off the virtual festivities in May with a Sonic Central stream packed to the brim with new announcements.

One such reveal included first details for Sonic Colors: Ultimate, a remaster of 2010's Sonic Colors that just hit stores earlier this month for PC and consoles. Plus, Sonic Origins will launch next year, offering a collection of classic titles from the long-running brand. Mobile game news and cursory information about the Sonic Colors: Rise of the Wisps animated series also came out of the digital event. However, the most significant piece of news revolved around a new 3D Sonic game set to arrive on an unspecified date in 2022.
