Sega has revealed a remaster of a rather beloved Sonic title in the form of Sonic Colors: Ultimate. The new remaster will release this September and bring the game to other non-Nintendo platforms for the first time ever, as Sonic Colors had originally launched exclusively on Wii and Nintendo DS back in 2010.

Sega has been attempting to revitalize the Sonic IP for the last few years, and seems to largely be having success. With collections of old titles, a surprisingly great film adaptation that broke the fabled video game movie curse, and more new games on the way, the company seems to have found its stride with the character. Sonic Colors: Ultimate leaked a few months ago, causing many to wait with bated breath for a proper reveal, and Sega finally lifted the curtain during its brief - but jampacked - 15-minute digital event.

Sega confirmed that Sonic Colors: Ultimate will release on September 7, 2021 for Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch. No concrete details have been given about what's new in the remaster, but fans who pre-order the physical edition will get a bonus keychain of Baby Sonic from the Sonic the Hedgehog film. Sega did promise a "few new features," but has yet to detail exactly what that means.

Sonic Colors: Ultimate isn't the only game that came out of the show, either. Sega confirmed a new Sonic game is coming in 2022, though no title or details were given beyond a very cryptic teaser, which fans are sure to pore over for a while. Sega is expected to appear at E3 2021 this summer and could also possibly make an appearance at Summer Game Fest, so there are plenty of opportunities for the publisher to dig deeper into its upcoming titles over the next few months.

It appears both 2021 and 2022 will be big years for Sega's furry hero. Not only will the sequel to the film be releasing next year alongside the next mainline game, but this year will include a collection of other key Sonic games, making 2021 a great year for Sonic remasters. It'll be interesting to see what new things Sega plans on doing with Sonic Colors: Ultimate when it releases later this, but the future is looking quite bright for Sonic the Hedgehog.
