Hope and trepidation circle around the upcoming 2019 Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Reactions to the movie poster were less than optimistic, and, honestly, who can blame fans for feeling that way. The realistically muscled Sonic created memes and nightmares in equal measure. Nevertheless, as true Sonic fans, we are anticipating the live-action film with great expectations.

While we wait for more information regarding this new movie adaptation of a video game, it is enjoyable to consider the possible characters they might include in the film. We already have confirmation that Jim Carrey will be playing Dr. Ivo Robotnik, but which other beloved Sonic characters are going to make an appearance? Read on if you want to know which characters we hope to see on the big screen.

Miles "Tails" Prower

As Sonic's long-time companion in the video game series, it would be nice to see this adorable, two-tailed fox make an appearance in the live-action film. With his first debut being in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Tails is a mainstay in the Sonic universe as a whole. If Sonic is going to get the chance to "go fast" in the movie, then Tails should be given the opportunity to hover around him like a helicopter.

It would be a shame if the movie focused more on the human sidekicks that hang around Sonic instead of the anthropomorphic animals that have long been fan favorites. No one cares as much about the humans, right?

Metal Sonic

Since it has been confirmed that Robotnik is going to make an appearance in the film, why not include Robotnik's most lethal creation, Metal Sonic? Crafted by Robotnik to be superior to Sonic, Metal Sonic is one of Sonic's most dangerous foes. Despite being a metallic version of our favorite racing hedgehog, Metal Sonic can run just as fast as his living, breathing counterpart.

There have even been times when Metal Sonic has outpaced the original. While Robotnik has always come across as a goofy villain, Metal Sonic exudes malevolence. With Metal Sonic in play, Sonic would be in real danger during the movie.

Knuckles

Knuckles is the anthropomorphic echidna (basically an anteater with spikes) that joined forces with Sonic and Tails after he realized Robotnik was tricking him into fighting Sonic. He first appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, but he eventually became a playable character in Sonic & Knuckles.

Despite being a straight-laced square next to the cool, chillax Sonic, Knuckles is another fan-favorite character we hope to see in the live-action movie. He could be the voice of reason whenever Sonic tries to do something crazy. If you're going to have a blue talking hedgehog in your movie, why not include a red talking echidna?

Amy Rose

Honestly, Amy Rose got on our nerves over time with her intense obsession over Sonic the Hedgehog's affections. This young, pink hedgehog only had eyes for Sonic, and heaven help whoever got in her way. But we're thinking her inclusion in the Sonic the Hedgehog live-action movie might not be such a bad thing.

Not only would we get to see what a speeding hedgehog looks like in the real world, but if Amy Rose were in the movie, we would get to see what Piko Piko Hammers look like too. A Piko Piko Hammer is a weapon Amy Rose utilizes in both the Sonic TV shows and games. With a single swipe of that hammer, Amy could send anybody she likes soaring into the stratosphere.

Shadow

Everyone needs a darker, edgier, and cooler version of themselves if they're going to be the star of a cartoon, and Shadow is that version of Sonic. Shadow the Hedgehog is a black-colored hedgehog with red accents. If you need more to tell you he's a grimmer version of Sonic, we don't know what else to tell you.

First appearing in Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow started out working for Robotnik. He later has a change of heart and becomes the series' main anti-hero. If he's included in the movie, Shadow could again have his origin tied to Robotnik. Though, we suppose, Shadow is more of a sequel kind of character. You need the first Sonic movie to establish how cool Sonic is before you introduce the even cooler Shadow.

Big The Cat

Even the most hardcore Sonic fans have to admit that the concept of a speedy, anthropomorphic hedgehog is a little ridiculous. Make that very ridiculous. So why not embrace that ridiculousness in the live-action movie? Include the most ridiculous character in the Sonic series and accept the fact that a serious Sonic story is not in the cards.

And which character best exemplifies ridiculousness other than Big the Cat. First appearing in Sonic Adventure, Big is a rotund cat that much prefers sitting around a lake with his friends and fishing than fighting. Even if he only appears in the movie as a cameo, it would be pretty nifty to see Big in the background, quietly fishing like he does best.

Silver

While Silver the Hedgehog made his debut in the worst Sonic the Hedgehog game to date, the concept surrounding his origin is fantastic movie material. He is an anthropomorphic hedgehog from the future that works to protect his timeline from the worst disasters imaginable.

The movie practically writes itself. Who needs a Sonic the Hedgehog movie when you could have a Silver the Hedgehog movie? Admittedly, if Silver were to be included in the 2019 Sonic the Hedgehog film, odds are he would steal the spotlight from Sonic. But come on! A time-traveling, talking hedgehog! Do we need to say more?!

Rouge

Rouge the Bat first appeared in Sonic Adventure 2. She, alongside Shadow, was an antagonist to Sonic and his friends. However, Rouge is more of a "chaotic good" character then she lets on. While she does side with the bad guys on occasion and possesses a healthy dose of self-interest, she's teamed up with Sonic to save the world before.

Including a character like her in the film would be an interesting choice, one that we as members of the audience would be intrigued to see. Morality in the Sonic series has always been one of good and evil, with Sonic on one side and Robotnik on the other. Rouge is a character that straddles that fine line.

Cream

Over the years, Sonic has collected a wide assortment of anthropomorphic friends. The cutest of all of them (excepting Tails, perhaps) is Cream. Cream is a peach-colored rabbit with floppy ears she can flap to achieve flight. She first appeared in Sonic Advance 2, and her adorability factor must explain why she has been in several games since.

Since the poster for the 2019 Sonic the Hedgehog is already providing fuel for the populace's nightmares, a cute version of Cream could counterbalance that deep-seated aversion. Cream could be the balm that heals our minds from traumatic visions of live-action Sonic.

Princess Elise

Just hear us out on this one. We know that the 2006 Sonic the Hedgehog game scarred our eyes beyond repair. That was in large part due to the incomprehensible romance between Princess Elise and Sonic. We know this. But don't you think including Princess Elise in the new movie as an acknowledgment of the horrors the Sonic series has visited upon us, as a belated mea culpa, would be perfect?

Even if she is mentioned in passing or we only see her briefly, it could be a humorous callback to the darkest time in Sonic's history.
