Star Ben Schwartz teases Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is much more epic in its scale than the first movie and hypes up the performances of his co-stars. The follow-up to the surprise 2020 hit will see the titular blue speedster left alone in Green Hills while his human friends Tom and Maddie go on vacation. Sonic's relaxation is upended, however, when the evil Doctor Robotnik/Eggman finds a way to return to Earth with the help of Knuckles the Echidna and sets out in search of the Master Emerald, requiring Sonic to team up with new friend Miles "Tails" Prower to stop the two before it's too late.
Ben Schwartz returns to lead the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 alongside fellow returning stars Colleen O'Shaughnessey as Tails, James Marsden as Tom, Jim Carrey as Doctor Eggman, Tika Sumpter as Maddie, Natasha Rothwell and Adam Pally. The film will also see the franchise introductions of Idris Elba as Knuckles and Shemar Moore in a currently undisclosed role. With time drawing nearer for the film's arrival in theaters, audiences are being offered a new slimmer of details to remain excited for Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
While speaking with ComicBook.com for his upcoming turn in Apple TV+'s The Afterparty, Ben Schwartz opened up about Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Though keeping his lips sealed on potential other game cameos in the film, the star did tease that the sequel is much more epic in its scale than the first movie and expressed his excitement for audiences to see the film and his co-stars. "I can't tell you anything, but I will say, I've watched it many times and we've done a billion records, it is huge. It is epic. In terms of size, compared to the first one, this is a movie, this is a film, this is a movie-film. This is what I'll say, we've got Colleen O'Shaughnessey, who was from the video game and played Tails, she plays Tails, Idris Elba's Knuckles, they're both awesome in it and they look awesome. Jim Carrey is incredible in it. Incredible guest stars. Natasha Rothwell, who's a powerhouse of a comedian, Adam Pally, who worked with [The Afterparty co-star] Sam [Richardson] and who's worked with me before, is in it and incredibly funny in it."
Where the first film kept its story relatively centered on its titular hero and the villainous Doctor Eggman, the pieces for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 look to be increasing the overall scale for the sequel. With the proper inclusion of Tails after his mid-credits debut in Sonic the Hedgehog and the introduction of Knuckles the Echidna, the character roster is expanding in exciting new directions for fans of Sega's video game franchise. Additionally, with the story centered around the various characters searching for the Master Emerald, the sequel will see a more globe-trotting adventure than that of the road trip setting of its predecessor.
Anticipation is far higher for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 amongst audiences thanks to the surprise success of the first film, with a lot of praise directed towards both Schwartz's vocal performance as the titular character and Carrey's turn as Doctor Eggman. Viewers are also eager to hear more of Elba's Knuckles as the star's performance has gone viral in the past few months and instituted a "sexy Knuckles craze." The wait for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is nearly over as the film is set to hit theaters on April 8.
