KJ Apa tries to survive a pandemic in the new trailer for Songbird. The thriller, co-produced by Michael Bay, was first announced in May. At the time, it was revealed that the low-budget film would be worked on without multiple people being in the room at the same time. Additionally, it was noted that there wouldn’t be any scenes that require the actors to interact directly. In this way, Songbird looks to tap into that feeling of almost complete isolation that many felt in the initial months of the pandemic.

The thriller centers around Nico (Apa), a courier who has COVID immunity. As he spends his time biking across Los Angeles and working the frontlines, Nico finds that he’s fallen in love with Sara (Sofia Carson), who is stuck at home in the fourth year of lockdown. Once it’s believed that Sara has been infected, Nico desperately tries to save her from being imprisoned. Or worse. The new trailer for Songbird, which slows down Bob Marley’s upbeat “Three Little Birds” to menacing levels, offers a glimpse into this dystopian near-future. Songbird is directed by Adam Mason, who collaborated with Simon Boyes on the script. Along with Carson and Apa, who is known for playing Archie Andrews on Riverdale, the thriller also stars Craig Robinson, Bradley Whitford, Peter Stormare, Alexandra Daddario, Paul Walter Hauser, and Demi Moore.

Mason, who has directed horror stories across film and television, will be helming the unique terror of trying to live through a deadly virus. The genre, known as pandemic horror, has proved surprisingly popular with titles like Contagion and She Dies Tomorrow receiving added attention since the start of 2020. Songbird, which will be coming to audiences soon, will look to get that same level of buzz.
