Focus Features recently released the first trailer for the new Sofia Coppola film Somewhere, featuring Stephen Dorff, Michelle Monaghan, and Elle Fanning.
The trailer, which can be seen on iTunes, revolves around Dorff’s character – an actor who reexamines his life after being forced to spend time with his young daughter.
Here’s the plot synopsis for the film:
“Set in West Hollywood’s famous Chateau Marmont hotel, Somewhere tells the story of Johnny Marco (Stephen Dorff), an actor living life to its excesses until a visit from his 11-year-old daughter (Elle Fanning) makes him wake up to face himself.”
It has been four years since Coppola’s last film (the highly stylized Marie-Antoinette) and, from the looks of this trailer, the director is returning to a similar subject matter that earned her multiple Academy Award nominations (and one win) in 2003 for Lost in Translation.
If you don’t see the connection between Somewhere and Lost in Translation, consider how each film hinges on the role that celebrity plays in hindering the development of genuine emotional relationships. In Translation, Bill Murray plays an aging actor who seeks companionship as his career, and his fame, wind down.
In Somewhere, Dorff plays the opposite role – but with similar emotional baggage. His career is going strong, but his fame has left him emotionally despondent – forcing him to live life “to its excesses.” In both cases, the lead character finds redemption through the help of a “normal” character, i.e. someone untainted by Hollywood and all of its social trappings.
Seeing as Lost in Translation was one of my favorite movies of the last decade, I’m very intrigued by Somewhere. In particular, I’m impressed by Dorff’s performance. Obviously, simply judging by the trailer, you can’t get a solid sense of whether he’ll bring his a-game to the entire film – but it looks like this could be a breakout performance for the 36-year-old actor.
What do you think of the trailer for Somewhere? Could this be the role that makes Stephen Dorff a major leading man in Hollywood?
