The latest rumor about the Solo: A Star Wars Story trailer indicates the preview will finally debut this week. About four months separate the film from its theatrical release, and Lucasfilm has curiously not released any marketing materials yet. That development could likely be attributed to the studio (which hasn't promoted more than one movie at once) wishing to keep the focus on The Last Jedi, but it nevertheless has made people concerned about Solo's potential quality. Fellow May tentpoles Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2 have had trailers out for a while, and it felt like Lucasfilm was trying to hide Solo from the eyes of the public.
However, with Episode VIII now a $1 billion hit and slowing down at the box office, attention is slowly being turned to this year's Star Wars installment. In the past week, Disney unveiled an official Solo synopsis and reportedly showed footage at a Germany press event, which went over very well with attendees. This has only increased demand for a teaser, and fortunately it looks like the long wait is almost over.
Twitter account Star Wars Junk shared info from a source at AMC corporate, saying the Solo trailer is scheduled to be placed with this week's Maze Runner: The Death Cure. It's expected the preview will be released online a couple days prior, with Wednesday, January 24 the most plausible.
#Solo trailer this week, most likely Wednesday. Source at the corporate side of AMC tells me Solo trailer will be placed (not attached) with Maze Runner releasing Jan 26. But trailer will hit online days before. Guys been right before. But file as rumor as always. (Errors fixed)— Star Wars Junkman (@StarWarsJunk) January 21, 2018
This isn't the first time the Solo trailer has been rumored for January. Earlier this month, speculation suggested it would air on an episode of ABC's Good Morning America, but that obviously did not come to pass. Hopefully, this report pans out and fans get their first look at the spinoff in the next few days. Lucasfilm has a bit of an uphill climb when it comes to selling the title to general audiences. Not only did the major production issues raise several red flags, there's a general sense of apathy about a Han Solo prequel. Solo is going to have to work overtime to justify its existence, but its status as an underdog could be beneficial. If expectations are low, there's more of a chance it pleasantly surprises viewers. Word suggests Solo will be a classic throwback movie, which longtime fans would enjoy.
With a script by veteran Star Wars scribe Lawrence Kasdan and a talented cast consisting of Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson, and Emilia Clarke, Solo certainly has the pieces in place to be an entertaining blockbuster. The big question mark will be Ron Howard, who took over as director for the fired Phil Lord and Chris Miller last summer. Howard is an Oscar-winning filmmaker, but his output (especially recently) has been highly erratic. Still, he's proven to be reliable when working with a great screenplay, and by all accounts, Lucasfilm is proud of what Kasdan turned in. Ideally, what Howard delivers will make everyone forget about the controversy.
