When playing Solasta: Crown of the Magister players have the ability to choose between many different options when creating their characters. Creating a single character is a process that a player is able to spend a lot of time on as they choose between races, classes, ability scores, skills, and even personality choices. Luckily the game pulls a lot from its inspiration, Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition, so those familiar should be able to create their characters with no problem.

One class that fans of tabletop games should be intimately familiar with is the basic fighter. When someone thinks about a warrior in a fantasy context, the fighter is pretty much exactly what they would picture. This is without a doubt the most versatile combat-centric class that players can either make into a powerful damage-dealing tank or a quick-footed duel wielder that hits their opponent several times in a row before dashing away. This guide shows players how to best play as a fighter.

Solasta: Crown of the Magister - How to Build a Fighter

Solasta Crown of The Magister Dungeon

Fighters are a terrific class for both veterans and newcomers to 5e. This is due to the fact that the player can either keep things simple and play as a character who hits stuff really hard, or the player can tweak the class in different ways to make it extremely powerful in a wealth of different ways. No matter how the player chooses to play their fighter though they will want to invest in their ability scores in the correct way. A fighter will get better use out of certain abilities and should avoid some others.

The first thing for a player to do when building a fighter is to decide if they want a heavy weapon user or more a small finesse weapon person. Early on it will make more sense to use a heavy weapon or a one-handed weapon with a shield, but the player can get a lot out of using smaller weapons or ranged attacks. Depending on which the player wants to choose will determine if they should make strength or dexterity their core stat. Bigger weapons will use strength for attack rolls whereas ranged and finesse weapons will use dexterity. If the player chooses to bump dexterity up to 16 they can completely dump strength. Strength players however should put the ability at 16 but keep dexterity at 10 in order to not have a negative for initiative rolls. Keep in mind that if playing a dexterity build the player can probably forgo armor entirely as their AC will be very high based on their dexterity modifier.

Once the player has chosen which damage-dealing score to go towards they can then pump a high number of points into the constitution score. Constitution should be put as close to the damage-dealing stat as possible because a fighter will more than likely take a huge amount of damage during the course of an adventure. From there it's probably best to make wisdom the third-highest stat at 14 considering wisdom saving throws are very common in Solasta. The rest of the stats are really up to the player depending on how they wish to play their fighter. They can use leftover points to increase their higher stats considerably or grant themselves a nice secondary ability in charisma.

Humans are probably the best choice for the player to make for their race as it will grant a +1 to all of their ability scores and therefore allow them to further spread points out to maximize their totals. It is also a good idea to use the Lawkeeper or Sellsword backgrounds in order to acquire proficiencies in different areas.

Solasta: Crown of the Magister - Best Fighter Skills

Selecting skills Fighter can be a very interesting process because it really depends on what route the player wants to take their character. A strength-based fighter and a dexterity-based fighter will want to acquire different skills in order to perform better in combat. Also depending on if the player chose to dump certain abilities will determine if they get good use out of different skill types. Here are the best skills for a fighter to acquire:

  • Athletics/Acrobatics - These skills are based on strength or dexterity respectively, and can be used for a wide array of different physical activities. Players should acquire the one that they have the highest stat in.
  • Insight - This is based on Wisdom and will allow a Fighter to tell if someone is lying to them or not.
  • Perception - Another Wisdom skill that will grant a fighter more awareness of their surroundings.
  • Intimidation - This should only be used if the player didn't treat charisma as a dump stat. This will allow the Fighter to threaten characters to get what they want.

On top of these skills, the player can also acquire a fighting style that will grant them special abilities during a fight. Fighters can't make good use of pretty much any of the fighting styles that are available to them. A ranged attacker can decide to acquire Archery to gain a +2 to all ranged attack rolls, Great Weapon Fighting in order to earn the chance to reroll any damage rolls that equal one or two, or even gain the ability to add their attack modifier to their second weapon when duel-wielding with Two-Weapon Fighting.

Solasta: Crown of the Magister - Best Fighter Build

Because of the Fighter's versatility, there is a wide range of different builds for the player to create in Solasta, but by far one of the best for players to use is a strong Spellblade build. After making it to level three the player is able to choose from three different archetypes for their Fighter, and the Spellblade winds up being incredibly powerful. This is because it allows the player to acquire powerful offensive spells to go along with their physical abilities. With this archetype, a Fighter can become practically unstoppable.

Playing as a Spellblade is a little different than other classes. First, the player will want to make intelligence their third-highest score rather than wisdom as they will be casting music using this ability. Additionally, they will want to select the Dueling fighting style because this will grant the player +2 to damage rolls when using a sword and shield. Once the player becomes a Spellblade they will be able to acquire a series of different cantrips and level one Wizard spells. One of the best parts of this build though is that any weapon the Fighter carries is now magical in nature and can deal damage to enemies immune to non-attacks.

As the player levels up they will also acquire the ability to use their weapon as a spellcasting focus as well as gain more powerful spells to use against foes. The best idea is to acquire spells like Scorching Ray, Magic Missile, and Burning Hands. Here are some other tips to maximize skills as a Spellblade Fighter:

  • Have secondary loadout be only the Fighter carrying a one-handed weapon. Until Level 7 the Fighter will need a free hand to cast, but switching between loadouts is free once per turn.
  • Wearing heavy armor and using a +2 shield can easily put the player at a 20 AC, so do this to make the fighter nearly impossible to hit.
  • Try to find the Headband of Intellect and Belt of Giant Strength to gain a +4 to intellect and a 25 strength score.
