Hulu has officially renewed the adult animated sci-fi comedy series Solar Opposites for season 4 ahead of its return for season 3 on the streamer. Co-created by Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan, the show centers on a group of aliens from the planet Shlorp as they crash land in middle America after the destruction of their home world. In addition to co-creating and executive producing, Roiland leads the cast alongside Thomas Middleditch, Sean Giambrone and Mary Mack.

With an elongated gap in the production on Adult Swim's Rick and Morty, Roiland and McMahan began developing the series for Fox before the network originally passed on it, though 20th Television worked with the duo to bring it to Hulu, who immediately ordered two eight-episode seasons. Upon its 2020 debut, Solar Opposites received rave reviews from critics and became the platform's most-watched original comedy premiere of the year. Hulu renewed Solar Opposites for season 3 shortly after its premiere and the trend is continuing for the streaming service and series.

Nearly three months after season 2 premiered, Hulu has announced it has officially renewed Solar Opposites for season 4 ahead of its season 3 premiere. In addition to confirming a 12-episode series as is the case with the next chapter, the streamer also revealed that season 3 is slated to premiere in 2022. Check out the hilarious Twitter announcement below:

Roiland's rise to stardom with Rick and Morty certainly helped establish him as a household name that could sell anything outside of the voice acting realm, but Solar Opposites has been the ultimate proof that he's the real deal. Rather than borrow a formula or even jokes from the Adult Swim hit, he, McMahan and co-showrunner and writer Josh Bycel have delivered consistently unique and hilarious material across the first two seasons of the Hulu series. Though not frequently as discussed on social media as Rick and Morty, it's been pretty clear that Solar Opposites has found a large audience that could swiftly catch up to Roiland's fellow series.

One of the biggest points of promise for this early renewal of Solar Opposites is the extra time it allots McMahan, Bycel and the writers room to develop the story and episodes for the future of the series. Season 2 certainly saw the group further establish their own tone and formula, including the murder mystery set inside the human terrarium of The Wall, showing a future full of exciting potential. With season 3 set to debut next year, it will be interesting to see what the creatives deliver with an extended 12 episodes in comparison to the eight episodes of the first two seasons.
