Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: October 3, 2010

This Week:

The Social Network clicks with audiences for the number one spot; Ron Howard and Jodie Foster have a Stroke of Insight; DiCaprio, Maguire and Seyfried eye The Great Gatsby; Keke Palmer is a Runaway; Ciaran Hinds and Violante Placido saddle up with Nic Cage for Ghost Rider 2 and ladies rejoice -  Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep unite for the ultimate chick flick.

Box Office

David Fincher’s Facebook drama The Social Network (read our review here) found a few friends over the weekend, enabling the $40 million drama to capture the top spot at the box office. The film should score about $23 million over the weekend, and could continue to do well due to strong reviews and positive word of mouth. The Aaron Sorkin-penned film stars Jesse Eisenberg, Justin Timberlake, future Spider-Man Andrew Garfield, and Rooney Mara who is set to star in Fincher's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, alongside Daniel Craig.

social network debuts at number one

Legend Of The Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole and Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps are fighting it out for second place - with both films grossing in the region of $10.5 million. The CGI film is holding up quite well and has now grossed $30 million since its debut last week, while the Michael Douglas/Shia LaBeouf film has banked $36 million.

Ben Affleck’s The Town has upped its cume to $64 million. The Oscar winner’s latest film banked just under $10 million over the weekend - there’s still a decent chance that it could hit the $100 million.

Easy A brought in another $7 million giving it a total of $42 million, while You Again scored another $5.6 million giving it an unimpressive $16.5 million.

Horror remake Let Me In only managed $5.2 million. The low gross isn’t a huge surprise considering the original Swedish film failed to set the box office ablaze - despite stellar reviews when it was released two years ago. Let Me In was probably reasonably inexpensive, but if you’re interested I’d recommend just catching the original (Let The Right One In) on DVD.

Case 39 is an interesting... er... case. The film (which stars Renee Zellweger and Bradley Cooper) was originally shot in 2006 and was already released internationally, grossing $17 million. The chiller grossed just over $5 million over the weekend, meaning that it should cover its $27 million budget when all is said and done.

M.Night Shyamalan’s Devil was in ninth place after scaring up a little under $4 million. The fright film has now grossed over $27 million – which is about $3 million less than its production budget. Expect it to find a larger audience on DVD.

Alpha and Omega rounded out the top ten after banking $3 million - which upped its cume to $19 million.

2. No one markets their product quite like Disney. Well, maybe Marvel Entertainment – but that is Disney these days, so it’s the same thing.

The house with the mouse has already brought theme park rides Pirates of the Caribbean and The Haunted Mansion to the big screen, but that’s not big enough for Disney. Now the company plans to bring the entire Magic Kingdom to the big screen!

3. The word on the street is Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and Amanda Seyfried may star in a new film version of The Great Gatsby.

new gatsby adaptation

Baz Luhrmann is currently deciding whether or not to direct the film which could potentially star DiCaprio as Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as his confidante Nick Carraway, with Amanda Seyfried portraying Daisy Buchanan.

With regards to casting rumors Luhrmann said:

"You know I think of casting all the time, but I put that to the side and I complete the text. Obviously there are natural choices and there is a natural top of the list, but I really refuse to say anything until we have text right."

4. It appears that Keke Palmer is set to star in the big screen adaptation of Marvel’s Runaways, which could be directed by director Peter Sollet (Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist).

5. Ciaran Hinds and Italian actress Violante Placido are currently in negotiations to join Nicolas Cage in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

According to THR:

“The story sees Johnny Blaze, aka Ghost Rider (Cage), hiding out in remote Eastern Europe and struggling to repress his curse. Blaze is recruited by a sect to take on the devil (Hinds), who wants to take over his mortal son’s body on the boy’s birthday.”

The original film wasn’t a critical hit – but it did score over $200 million worth of bank, so a sequel was inevitable. Oh, and Sony would have lost the rights to the character if they didn’t make another film.

6. The pairing of Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep seems like a brilliant idea to score some money (and Oscar nods) from women of a certain age.

The duo are set to star in an adaptation of the Tracy Letts' Pulitzer and Tony-winning play August: Osage County for John Wells.

“Streep will play Violet, the drug-addicted matriarch of the working class Weston clan. Roberts will play Barbara Fordham, the oldest daughter in the family. While mom's problems and her penchant for revealing family secrets is a big issue, Barbara is melting because her husband is cheating with a college student. They are brought together when Violet's husband goes missing and all three of their daughters come home to rally around mom. In the process, a lot of family secrets get revealed.”

It won't get heat from the comic book crowd – but never underestimate the box office power of Streep and Roberts.

Wells' next release is The Company Men starring comeback kid Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, Tommy Lee Jones, and Chris Cooper . It opens on October 22.
