Actress Rowan Blanchard lands a role on TNT’s Snowpiercer TV show. The dystopian thriller is based on the 1982 French graphic novel Le Transperceneige, along with Bong Joon-ho’s 2013 big screen adaptation. The 17-year-old Blanchard is best known for starring in the Disney Channel series Girl Meets World from 2014 to 2017.

TNT’s Snowpiercer will continue events of the 2013 film, in which a continuously moving train carries post-apocalypse survivors above the earth. In the original movie, Chris Evans stars as the revolutionary figure Curtis, with Song Kang-ho, Ed Harris, and Tilda Swinton appearing in supporting roles. The Snowpiercer TV show was ordered by TNT in January 2018 and will reportedly feature an “ongoing mystery.” After former showrunner Josh Friedman left the series because of “creative differences,” Orphan Black’s co-creator Graeme Manson was hired to oversee the series. In June 2018, Snowpiercer pilot director Scott Derrickson expressed his distaste for reshoots that changed the initial creative vision. After a controversial production process, Snowpiercer is reportedly scheduled to premiere this summer.

Per Deadline, Blanchard has been cast in TNT’s Snowpiercer. She’ll portray a teenage character named Alexandra with “mysterious connections to the history of Snowpiercer." While Jennifer Connelly and Daveed Diggs are the series leads for Snowpiercer season 1, Blanchard will reportedly appear as a guest star, with an option to return as a series regular if TNT orders a second season.

For Snowpiercer season 1, the aforementioned Bong will co-executive produce, along with popular South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook. Last August, The Walking Dead’s Steven Ogg was cast in Snowpiercer season 1 as a career convict who leads a small group on the titular train. The main cast will also feature Mickey Sumner (Low Winter Sun), Annalise Basso (Slender Man), Alison Wright (The Americans), and Sheila Vand (A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night).

As for Blanchard, TNT’s Snowpiercer marks another big TV gig after having a recurring role as Jackie Geary on ABC’s The Goldbergs. While Blanchard is mostly known for her television work, she appeared in Ava DuVernay’s 2018 film A Wrinkle in Time starring Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, and Mindy Kaling. The science fiction adventure film marked her first feature film since starring in 2011’s Spy Kids: All the Time in the World. Later this year, Blanchard will appear in the film A World Away, an adventure movie directed by her father, Mark Blanchard.

While many TV series either recycle network stars or cast up-and-comers, TNT has two strong performers with Connelly and Diggs. While it's unclear how Blanchard will fit into the show's narrative, she'll bring an existing fanbase to the series, all the while receiving the chance to establish herself as a grown actress. Given the enduring legacy of the original Snowpiercer film, it seems likely that TNT's series will earn a devoted following.
