Snowpiercer has been renewed for season 3 at TNT. Based on the Snowpiercer graphic novel and Bong Joon-Ho's 2013 film of the same name, which starred Chris Evans, the post-apocalyptic series premiered on TNT in May 2020 after being stuck in development hell for several years. The dystopian sci-fi series is set over seven years after Earth has become a frozen wasteland and follows the passengers of the Snowpiercer, a huge train that never stops moving and carries the last of humanity. The series stars Daveed Diggs as former detective Andre Layton and Jennifer Connelly as Melanie Cavill, the Voice of the Train.

After years of creative differences, reshoots, and network changes, Snowpiercer was renewed for season 2 prior to its first season's debut, which ranked as the most-watched new cable entertainment program in May. Like many projects in 2020, production on the highly-anticipated second season was shut down back in March due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, much of season 2 was already completed and is set to premiere on TNT on January 25. The first teaser trailer for season 2 was released in October and showed Layton facing off against billionaire inventor Mr. Wilford, played by Sean Bean, a new addition to the season 2 cast.

Now less than a week ahead of the season 2 premiere on January 25, Variety reports that Snowpiercer has been renewed for a third season. The renewal makes Snowpiercer the only ongoing original series left for TNT, with Animal Kingdom and Claws both coming up on their final seasons.

Snowpiercer Season 2 Cast

Snowpiercer season 1 ended on quite a cliffhanger, with the reveal that the mysterious Mr. Wilford is still alive and has taken over Snowpiercer with his new train. The season 1 finale also sets up season 2 with the twist that Melanie's presumably deceased daughter Alexandra (Rowan Blanchard) is still alive and working with Mr. Wilford. Mr. Wilford's arrival has been largely promoted for season 2, with promises of an intense showdown between Wilford and Layton, who was given control of the Snowpiercer at the end of season 1.

A season 3 renewal is exciting news for Snowpiercer fans, as season 2 hasn't even premiered yet, which means they can expect exciting things to come from the show. From Alexandra still being alive to Wilford's new train and technology, season 1 certainly set up a gripping second season. Fans still have a while before a season 3 release, and with season 2 not having premiered yet, it's uncertain which characters will survive this season to return for season 3.
