Gal Gadot is very excited to play the Evil Queen in Disney's upcoming live-action Snow White. As the Mouse House's very first animated movie, it's perhaps only fitting that 1937's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is finally joining in on the studio's ongoing trend of remaking its classics into live-action form. This new, reimagined take on Snow White has been in the works since 2016. Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man) is attached to direct, while Erin Cressida Wilson (The Girl on the Train) is penning the script.

Snow White remains without any kind of release date, but production is expected to start up sometime in 2022. The movie received a major boost this past summer when West Side Story breakout Rachel Zegler was cast as Snow White, a role she immediately proved herself to be perfect for with her unabashed love of Disney. Gadot joined as the Evil Queen this week; she was reportedly the producers' top pick for the role from the start, whereas Zegler's casting came after a thorough search.

Not long after Gadot's Snow White casting was announced, she hit the red carpet for the premiere of her new Netflix movie Red Notice. Variety caught up with her there and asked about what part of this new version of the classic fairytale made her want to sign on. Ever a pro at handling spoilers thanks to her time in the DCEU, Gadot was careful not to say too much, but she did reveal this:

There's so much that I cannot share with you that would actually answer this question. The take on this story is so different and delightful and full of joy. I'm very, very excited. I wish I could share more!

Disney's previous live-action remakes have all attempted to, on some level, offer something new to the well-known stories they were telling, and it sounds like Snow White will be the same. This iteration is expected to expand upon the fairytale and offer some new music, which is being written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land). Clearly, whatever else is new about this Snow White was enough to pull in Gadot, who is no stranger to beloved characters. This time around, though, she'll be taking on an iconic villain rather than a hero, and that's an interesting prospect.

With Gadot having signed on and production being eyed for 2022, it looks like Snow White is moving into a more active development stage. Disney has numerous live-action remakes on the way, with Peter Pan & Wendy and The Little Mermaid among the next expected to arrive. Snow White could perhaps arrive in late 2023 or even in 2024 based on the tentative production timeline, so fans still have a ways to go before they can see Gadot's Evil Queen in the flesh. Nevertheless, if Gadot is excited, then it should be well worth the wait.
