Relativity Media and Universal are engaged in a fierce battle that will see their respective Snow White projects - Tarsem Singh's untitled take on the story vs. Snow White and the Huntman - released within three months of one another in 2012. Most everyone else is still just wondering why we're getting two "re-imaginings" of the fairy tale in the first place.
Singh will begin shooting his film about the ebony-haired maiden within the week; meanwhile, Universal hired on an Academy Award-nominated screenwriter to do a rewrite of the script for Huntsman, which should start shooting in August.
Deadline learned that Hossein Amini (The Wings of the Dove) will be reworking the most recent draft of the Huntsman script by Evan Spiliotopoulos - whose resume is composed primarily of direct-to-video sequels to Disney animated films like The Jungle Book, Cinderella and The Little Mermaid. Going off that and Amini earning additional praise for his scriptwork on Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive, this move should only improve the quality of Universal's Snow White pic. Sam Claflin previously speculated that this script rewrite might now include a love triangle subplot involving his Prince Charming character, Snow White (Kristen Stewart), and the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) - since Hemsworth would be a much more age-appropriate love interest for Stewart than original Huntsman actor Viggo Mortensen.
With production on Snow White and the Huntsman gearing up to begin in the near future, it's unlikely that Amini will be doing any extensive script reworking. However, the possible incorporation of more romance into the fantasy adventure tale wouldn't be out of the question at this point. Let the jokes about Stewart appearing in another Twilight-style young adult romance commence!
Relativity and Singh's Snow White project however, is slated to hit theaters a few months before Universal's Huntman, in Spring 2012. Hence the not-so-unexpected news that the action-adventure-comedy will begin principal photography this month on June 20th, 2011.
Melissa Wallack (Meet Bill) and Jason Keller (Machine Gun Preacher) are the screenwriters behind Singh's fairy tale project, which offers a more action-packed take on the famous Brothers Grimm story. Here, Snow White (Lily Collins) must team up with the famous seven dwarfs to battle her wicked stepmother (Julia Roberts) for control of her fantastical kingdom. Armie Hammer will costar as Miss White's object of affection, Prince Andrew Alcott.
Singh as a filmmaker is well renowned for his visual flair and his Snow White artistic team includes producer designer Tom Foden (The Cell) and Oscar-winner Eiko Ishioka - who was responsible for designing the extravagant costumes and outfits in Francis Ford Coppola's adaptation of Dracula. So it's pretty safe to say that this is shaping up to be one visually-rich fairy tale refashioning, if nothing else.
Relativity will release Singh's still-untitled Snow White movie in theaters on March 16th, 2012. Snow White and the Huntsman will arrive in theaters later next year on June 1st. Which are you more excited about?
