'Snow White and the Huntsman' Spinoff Adds Jessica Chastain

It's only been two years since Jessica Chastain stunned audiences with her Academy Award-nominated role in Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty. And in that time, the leading lady has amassed a large body of work, including notable performances in Mama, A Most Violent Year and the blockbuster hit Interstellar. Later this year, she'll continue her streak with starring roles in two highly anticipated movies, Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak and Ridley Scott's The Martian.

For her next part, however, it seems she'll be taking a little bit of a breather.

Variety reports, Chastain has joined the cast of Universal Pictures' followup to Snow White and the Huntsman, The Huntsman. Although character details are currently vague, they do disclose she'll be playing the Huntsman Eric's love interest.

According to the official logline for the film, The Huntsman will reveal how the Huntsman Eric (Hemsworth) and the Evil Queen Ravenna (Charlize Theron) first met, before the events of Snow White and the Huntsman. Emily Blunt also recently joined the cast as the new villain, while Kristen Stewart, who played Snow White in the original film, is not expected to return.

First-time director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan (Highlander) will helm the film from a script by The Walking Dead creator Frank Darabont. Darabont was previously attached to direct but left the project over creative differences.

Chris Hemsworth in Snow White and the Huntsman

After a string of leading roles in big budget or highly publicized films, Chastain's decision to co-star in the follow-up to a film that received mix reviews is surprising. While the cast of Hemsworth, Theron and Blunt should provide good acting material for Chastain, working opposite a first-time director will be an interesting experience after the likes of Bigelow, del Toro and Scott.

For Universal, casting Chastain is just the latest step in the right direction to getting audiences in theaters when the film releases early next year. Casting should wrap up within the next few weeks for production to get underway very soon.

But what do you think, Screen Rant readers? Are you interested in seeing The Huntsman? Are the casting choices encouraging?

The Huntsman releases in U.S. theaters on April 22nd, 2016.
