Snoop Dogg makes himself The Sexiest Man Alive. The annual honor, given out by People magazine, has already made its pick for this year’s Sexiest Man Alive, but that didn’t stop everyone’s favorite LBC native from having some fun.

Snoop Dogg, whose real name is Calvin Broadus Jr., has gone through several image transformations over the years. When he first arrived on the scene in 1992 as a protégé of acclaimed rapper and former N.W.A. alum Dr. Dre, Broadus was known officially as Snoop Doggy Dogg. He kept this alias until 1998, when a label change required the superstar rapper to legally alter his name, resulting in the Snoop Dogg alias that most are familiar with today. However, this wasn’t it for major name changes. In 2013, spurned on by a newfound interest in Jamaica, reggae, and Rastafarianism, Snoop underwent a spiritual journey to the island nation, during which he changed his stage name to Snoop Lion. Since that time, Snoop’s efforts to make it big as a reggae artist haven’t been as successful as his rap career, which is why the 48-year-old is now back to being known as Snoop Dogg.

Clearly Snoop likes a good alias, or in some cases, a title that reflects his preeminent status. With the announcement of this year’s Sexiest Man Alive honor going to the multi-talented John Legend, Snoop has apparently decided that the wrong choice was made. Rather than waste time just talking about it, Snoop decided to actually do something about it. Taking to his Instagram account, Snoop posted a, well, slightly doctored version of the People magazine Legend cover that announced him as The Sexiest Man Alive. Of course, no depiction of Snoop Dogg would be complete without the inclusion of one of the star’s trademark, parsnip-sized joints, which also happened to make it into the image. The altered magazine’s blurb about this newly crowned champ declares “Snoop Dogg: How a Crip Took Your Chick,” a statement that references Snoop’s long time affiliation with the notorious L.A. gang. It’s all in good fun, though, as indicated by Snoop’s own inclusion of a laughing emoji. The one-time gangsta rapper may have numerous albums that depict him as a tough-as-nails badass, but his sense of humor is clear in this take on the Sexiest Man Alive concept.

It’s nice to see that while Snoop’s profile and popularity over the years have gone through different stages, one aspect of his persona that has grown is his ability to laugh. It’s through this desire to mesh his streetwise persona with what are at times completely opposite celebrities such as Martha Stewart and Matthew McConaughey, that have helped to build Snoop’s public persona beyond the status of a rapper. And while the magazine cover in question may not be real, there are still plenty of fans out there who would choose Snoop Dogg over John Legend for this honor any day.
