Rebellion has shown off Sniper Elite 5’s new enhanced Kill Cam in a recently-released trailer for the upcoming shooter. Sniper Elite 5 was announced last year, and promises to bring the franchise to France for the first time. Rebellion hopes to improve the series’ most defining feature with enhanced visuals and more in-depth player control of the Kill Cam.

Debuting in 2005 and developed by Rebellion Developments, Sniper Elite is a third-person tactical shooter stealth series most famous for its series-defining mechanic, the Kill Cam. When a player takes an exceptional shot with their rifle, the Kill Cam will track the bullet’s passage to, and sometimes into, the enemy while in slow motion. With each entry of the series, the Kill Cam has managed to portray more gruesome details of each kill, showing anatomically accurate x-ray images depicting where the bullet penetrates targets while still in motion. The Kill Cam has become more advanced with each new Sniper Elite game, with new ways to execute the Kill Cam via melee attacks, showing the ricochet of bullets even into other multiple enemies, and even portraying environmental destruction.

In a new YouTube trailer from Rebellion, fans were given a fresh look at the newest incarnation of Sniper Elite 5’s Kill Cam. The graphically enhanced Sniper Elite 5 displays new levels of gruesome accuracy as the Kill Cam now resembles a visceral amalgamation of Fallout’s V.A.T.S. system, which also allowed a player to witness their kills in slow motion, and Mortal Kombat’s X-Ray system, which displayed certain fighting moves in macabre detail. Now players can follow a bullet through several points of the human body down to almost arterial detail. These improved visuals in Sniper Elite 5 also allow for the Kill Cam’s newest feature, internal ricocheting bullets. Bullets now ricochet off the bones of your target and into other body parts causing more grievous wounds.

Along with visual improvements, Sniper Elite 5 will offer several mechanical additions to the Kill Cam feature. In addition to the sniper rifle and melee attacks, the player will be able to utilize the iron sights of SMGs and pistols to activate the Kill Cam feature for the first time on these weapons. Over time, players have been privy to few Kill Cam options, namely being able to adjust the frequency of the Kill Cam or turning it off completely. Sniper Elite 5 will now allow players to adjust the speed during a Kill Cam’s cinematic in real-time and have control over camera angles as well.

While improvements to the Kill Cam are impressive, Rebellion promises several other refinements and improvements for Sniper Elite players to enjoy. Hidden throughout the missions are workbenches that will allow the player weapon customization options, and the ability to change weapon loadouts mid-mission. Along with a single-player campaign, which can also be enjoyed via two-player co-op, and a 16-player competitive multiplayer mode, Rebellion is introducing an all-new Invasion Mode. This mode allows other players to enter another player's campaign and tasks the invading player with eliminating the campaign host.

Rebellion is taking extra care to refine its 17-year-old series, and the improvements to Sniper Elite 5’s Kill Cam alone may very well be a selling point for fans. With its release date fast approaching, players won’t have to wait long to savor all the grisly details of their next kill - or shoot Sniper Elite 5's Hitler where it hurts.
