Snapchat's selfie flash is one of the app's most useful features, and thanks to a ring light option, it's now even better. Many phone cameras, iPhone included, offer a selfie flash. While some phones do have a dedicated front facing LED, most phones just light up the screen when the front flash option is selected. Snapchat also has a built-in flash for capturing selfies. With the selfie flash enabled, taking a selfie on Snapchat lights up your phone's display, so you can still take a Snap of yourself at night or in a dark room.

While Snapchat's selfie flash has always worked well, it's getting better. Instead of the selfie flash simply toggling on/off, it now has a ring light toggle. The ring light brightens up the edges of your phone's display with options for adjusting its intensity and color temperature. It's a lot like ring lights you can buy on Amazon, except it's built directly into the Snapchat app. The ring light is available on both iPhone and Android, but there are minor differences based on the operating system.

How Snapchat's Ring Light Works

Using the ring light is quite simple. Open the Snapchat app, make sure it's set to your front-facing camera, and tap the lightning bolt icon towards the top right of the screen. On iPhone, you'll see toggles for 'Regular' and 'Ring' that you can switch between. On Android, the ring light shows up by default with flash color buttons and a brightness slider.

To use the ring light, choose from the white, yellow, or blue color options. The white option is the neutral screen flash, the yellow option results in a warmer tone, while the blue option is cooler. Once you've selected the color of choice, tap anywhere on the screen to get rid of the ring light controls and record your Snap as usual. It's worth playing around with different options to see what works best for you.

Unlike the regular front flash that lights up the entire screen and can cause an unnatural glare to appear over your face, the ring light option only lights up the area surrounding your face. This ensures that your face is evenly illuminated, while keeping the background well lit too. The slider under the ring light options lets you adjust the intensity of the flash. Dragging the slider to the left reduces the intensity, while dragging it to the right increases it.

On an Android phone, the regular screen flash isn't available, and instead, users only get the ring light option. Android users who want to get rid of the ring light only have the option to turn off the selfie flash altogether. To do this, tap the flash icon on the Snapchat camera screen so that an 'x' appears next to the lightning bolt symbol.
