Bitmojis are a key part of the Snapchat experience, but to get the most out of them, users need to know how to customize their Bitmoji to their exact preferences. Here's how to edit Bitmojis in Snapchat (and how to change their outfits).

The Bitmoji story first began in 2014 when they were created by parent company Bitstrips. People could download the Bitmoji smartphone app, create a custom cartoon version of themselves, and then share stickers of their Bitmoji on social media sites, text messages, etc. In 2016, Snap Inc. (Snapchat's parent company) acquired Bitstrips and integrated Bitmoji right into Snapchat. While Bitmoji can still be accessed and used outside of Snapchat, the cartoon characters are everywhere on the app. Bitmoji act as Snapchat users' profile pictures, and Bitmoji stickers are built right into Snapchat DMs.

If it's been a while since someone last edited their Bitmoji, the good news is that Snapchat makes these controls very easy to find. Per the company's instructions, open the Snapchat app, tap the profile icon in the top-left corner, scroll down, and tap 'Edit Your Bitmoji.' From here, users have a wealth of customization options at their fingertips. They can change their Bitmoji's skin tone, hairstyle, facial hair, eye color, eyebrows, nose, face shape, mouth, facial lines, body type, and makeup. Tap the icons at the bottom of the screen to select a new part of the Bitmoji to customize, and if there's a paint drop icon next to one, tapping that allows users to change the color of whatever they're editing (such as hairstyle or eyebrows). Once someone is satisfied with the changes they've made, tap the 'Save' icon in the upper-right corner to confirm all the changes.

How To Change Snapchat Bitmoji Outfit

Editing Bitmoji outfit in Snapchat

In addition to editing the physical appearance of a Bitmoji, users can also change their outfit. While it's arguably not as important as changing the Bitmoji itself, taking time to create a personalized outfit is a great way to make sure someone's Bitmoji is fully representative of themselves. To do this, the steps are virtually identical as the ones above. Open the Snapchat app, tap the profile icon in the upper-left corner, scroll down, and tap 'Change Outfit' under the Bitmoji section. Here, users are presented with a wealth of options for outfitting their Bitmoji in the best look possible.

The first page presents users with pre-made outfits, including ones from Snapchat and fashion partners (such as Adidas and Vans). If someone wants to keep things simple, they can tap on one of these outfits, get a completely new look for their Bitmoji, and call it good right there. For folks that want to spend more time fine-tuning their outfit, Snapchat allows users to access a wide array of clothing — including tops, bottoms, dresses, footwear, socks, and outerwear. Many of the clothes feature multiple colors, along with an option to tuck/untuck a selected shirt. Once the perfect outfit has been chosen, tap 'Save' at the top right of the screen.

As mentioned above, someone's Bitmoji acts as their profile picture in Snapchat — whether that be on the Stories page, Chat page for DMs, chat stickers, or on the Snap Map. Bitmojis can be edited at any time and as often as someone wants, so feel free to tweak and customize whenever the urge hits.
