New images have revealed the characters, world, and ninja action of the upcoming live-action movie Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins. The film will be the G.I. Joe franchise’s first trip to the big screen since 2013’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation, rebooting the series for live-action with a new cast led by Henry Golding in the titular role. Andrew Koji, Iko Uwais, Úrsula Corberó, Samara Weaving, and Peter Mensah will also star in Snake Eyes, which is scheduled for a theatrical release on July 23, 2021.

After the immense box office success of Michael Bay’s first Transformers movie, Hasbro tried to catch lightning in a bottle again by bringing G.I. Joe to the big screen in 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. The film received poor critical reviews and underperformed financially when compared to Transformers, however - a trend that would repeat in the Dwayne Johnson-led sequel Retaliation. After some years away from the live-action world, G.I. Joe is returning with a new movie focused on the beloved ninja character Snake Eyes and his rivalry with Cobra ninja Storm Shadow.

Snake Eyes doesn’t seem to be focusing as much on cartoon-accurate costumes as past G.I. Joe movies, which makes sense given that the movie seems to mainly be a prequel. It’s likely that Snake Eyes will acquire his classic black armor before the film is over, transforming him into the hero longtime fans know and love. That transformation will probably be tied to the character’s recruitment into the G.I. Joe ranks, possibly setting up more sequels and spinoffs.

Storm Shadow’s new movie outfit is perhaps the most recognizable one seen in the released images. His stark white garb has always stood in sharp contrast to Snake Eyes’ black, and the images tease some fierce battles between the two in the final film. With luck, Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins will deliver a more satisfying live-action adaptation than previous attempts when it releases in theaters on July 23.
