Warning: SPOILERS for Snake Eyes: Deadgame #5

Snake Eyes has a new weapon in the fiction of G.I. Joe: Mjolnir, the legendary hammer of Thor the god of thunder himself. But is the hammer of thunder too much for the G.I. Joe universe? The limited series Snake Eyes: Deadgame has officially come to an end, but not without a supernatural twist that sees Mjolnir shattered once and for all.

G.I. Joe has always been slightly more grounded in reality than other comics, following elite special forces fighting the villainous C.O.B.R.A.. Throughout publication and various appearances in media, the show has remained mostly realistic, enhanced with over the top action and adventure. In fact, when supernatural elements are introduced, they are not often well received by the fans (Crystal Ball and Cobra-La chief among them). Given that, it might seem an odd choice to entrust Snake Eyes with a weapon as mystical in nature as Mjolnir--let alone see him encounter and even stronger weapon in the finale of Snake Eyes: Deadgame.

Snake Eyes being in possession of such a mighty supernatural item seems like the kind of addition to the G.I. Joe universe that might break it. However, it's not the universe that breaks, it's the hammer.

Snake Eyes Breaks Mjolnir Comic

Snake Eyes receives the hammer from the god of thunder himself after defeating a variety of opponents in this gauntlet fashioned by by Liefield, Chad Bowers, Adelso Corona, and Fredrico Blee. Mjolnir acts as a bit of an easy out for Snake Eyes, who uses it to get rid of every opponent that stands in his way. Except for Kirigun, the presumed-dead ancient ninja wizard. Kirigun shatters Mjolnir, forcing Snake Eyes to use his usual set of skills to defeat the wizard.

Having Kirigun, an admittedly very magical villain shatter Mjolnir, a very magical weapon seems a little bit like a "get out of jail free" card for a universe that does not have a lot of magic. If either Kirigun or Mjolnir was allowed to continue existing in the G.I. Joe universe, it would forever alter the status quo. It seems that Kirigun shattering Mjolnir (and, in turn, Snake Eyes defeating Kirigun) was a clean way to wrap up the story without any long-lasting magical effects for the universe.
