Smile 2 Confirmed After Runaway Success Of First Horror Movie

A sequel to Smile has been confirmed following the incredible success of the first movie. Released in September 2022, Smile follows Sosie Bacon as therapist Dr. Rose Cotter, who begins to experience supernatural phenomena after a traumatic incident with a patient. The horror movie was a major hit in theaters, garnering $217 million at the box office worldwide.

Now, Smile 2 has been confirmed by Paramount at CinemaCon, after the monumental success of the first movie. The news follows Smile director Parker Finn inking a deal with Paramount back in March. While there are no details regarding said deal, it's possible the recently-announced Smile 2 is part of it.

Everything To Expect From Smile 2

The end of Smile set the film up for a sequel, which could be where another movie jumps off from. Smile ended with Rose passing the curse of the smile entity onto Kyle Gallner's Joel while setting herself ablaze. This chilling finale hints at Joel becoming the main character for Smile 2 as he is forced to grapple with the curse in Rose's stead.

Smile 2 could also do more to flesh out the entity that haunts Rose throughout Smile. The demonic being does not have a name in Smile, and remains shrouded in mystery throughout the movie as it torments Rose. While some of that mystery would dissipate if Smile 2 explored the entity in more detail, this direction for the sequel would avoid making it feel like a retread of the previous movie.

Smile 2 could also follow different characters from Smile, perhaps showing the curse pass on to someone completely new. If it were to focus more on making sense of the film series' entity, then Smile 2 could also benefit from being a prequel to the original. With a multitude of possible routes for a Smile sequel, it seems there's plenty of horrifying angles Smile 2 could cover when it begins production.
