Sephiroth is now available in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - for those who can beat him in a challenge and unlock him early - and soon five more new Mii costumes will come along with his full release. These costumes consist of characters from Final Fantasy VII, but also feature the highly requested Geno from Super Mario RPG.

While the fighter reveals are considered the main attraction when it comes to the DLC packs in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the Mii costumes are also now considered important reveals as well. They can either excite fans with acknowledging a character that seemed impossible like with Sans, or it can disappoint those that wished to see said character in more than just costume form, like with Travis Touchdown. However they're received by players, there’s no denying that the Mii costumes can cause just as big a reaction as the fighters, if not more.

The Mii costumes that Nintendo revealed in today's Sephiroth showcase are all related to Square Enix. As expected, there are several Final Fantasy costumes, such as Tifa (Brawler), Barret (Gunner), and Aerith (Swordfighter) from Final Fantasy VII, as well as the Chocobo hat. The big costume reveal for this wave however is Geno (Gunner) once again. This is the second time Geno has been released as a Mii costume in Smash, the first being in Super Smash Bros. For 3DS and Wii U. However, this Geno does not come with the Forest Maze music unlike his release in Smash 4.

Geno has been a character that has been consistently requested ever since the days of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. His origin game, Super Mario RPG, has gotten rereleases on the Wii Virtual Console as well as on the SNES classic, but Geno himself hasn’t received much acknowledgement. This is likely due to Geno being a character owned by Square Enix, which makes using him in Nintendo properties difficult. In the original GBA release of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Geno had a cameo in Littlefungi Town, but the cameo got removed come the release of the deluxe remaster.

It’s impossible to know whether or not Geno will ever make his debut into Smash that’s more than just a spirit or Mii costume. While Sephiroth is also owned by Square Enix, he’s also a much more iconic character in the gaming landscape than Geno is. The requests for Geno may be loud and growing, but Geno is also arguably still a somewhat niche pick compared to other character options. At the same time though, there’s no saying that it’s impossible for him to get it. There was a time where director Masahiro Sakurai explained his reasons for not putting Ridley in Smash 4, but come Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Ridley made his debut. Steve and Sephiroth are also now playable characters in this series. If there’s anything that the Super Smash Bros series has shown through its lifespan, it’s that the impossible can become possible.
