Disney '90s sitcom Smart Guy is receiving a reboot which is currently in development. While the sitcom was produced by Disney, it initially ran on the Warner Bros. channel from 1997 to 1999. Tahj Mowry, brother of Sister, Sister's Tia and Tamera Mowry, starred in Smart Guy as T.J. Henderson, a quirky, 10-year-old genius who jumped grades from elementary school to high school. The series also starred John Marshall Jones, Jason Weaver, Essence Atkins, and Omar Gooding.
Smart Guy star Mowry confirmed to ET that there is a reboot in development. Mowry shared that it is in the very early stages of planning, and he has been meeting with the creative team to discuss it via Zoom. Mowry hopes that the reboot will appeal to its original fans while adding something "fresh and new" to the beloved series. As far as the cast goes, Mowry wants the entire original cast to return, but he can't guarantee it. He heavily implied that he will be returning to the lead role of T.J. Henderson and that the series will now focus on how T.J. has managed to navigate the world as an adult.
"There’s been lots of Zoom meetings and talks about this, so we do have the ball rolling on it. It's just a matter of time and timing, but we do have the possible home for it. We do have a writer, and I feel like I came up with a really fresh take on how we can bring that back with the whole cast and something that is fresh and new. But also something that the diehard fans will still get that nostalgic aspect of it as well."
Mowry revealed in his quote that a writer has joined that creative team. Additionally, he shared he has been presenting the reboot to networks and streaming platforms and has found a "possible home" for it. The series has aired episodes on The WB, Disney Channel, BET, and MTV2, so the Smart Guy reboot could end up on any of those channels' parent networks, HBO Max, Disney+, or Paramount+. For now, viewers can catch up on the original Smart Guy series by streaming it on Disney+.
