A horror retelling of Sleeping Beauty is officially in the works. Charles Perrault's 1697 fairy tale has been adapted into countless films and television shows over the years, including the classic 1959 animated Disney movie and the two live-action Maleficent films which retell the story from the perspective of the eponymous antagonist played by Angelina Jolie. The classic children's tale tells the story of a young princess who is cursed by an evil fairy to fall into a deep sleep and is awakened by a true love's kiss after a hundred years.

Per Bloody Disgusting, a horror retelling of the beloved children's story is in the works, with filming set to start in August 2023 in the United Kingdom. The movie will be directed by Louisa Warren (Cinderella’s Curse), with Jasmine Ebony Thomas (Night Girlz) writing the script. The cast includes Lora Hristova, Lila Lasso, Leah Glater, Robbie Taylor, Sophie Rankin, Charlotte Coleman, and Judy Tcherniak. The film is officially titled Sleeping Beauty’s Massacre, with Warren teasing:

"This film will flip everything as you know it on its head. It is savage, dark and utterly horrifying. I am setting out to create the most uncomfortable horror experience to date. There will be lies, gore and a big massacre. If you look back at the original material there is so much to play with."

Sleeping Beauty’s Massacre continues a recent trend of putting horrifying twists on classic children’s tales, with Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey being a popular example. Recently, it was revealed that Cinderella’s Curse was in the works, and now, a second dark take on a Disney princess is being developed by the same director and production company. However, the original story of Sleeping Beauty is actually quite dark, with subsequent retellings and adaptations softening these darker elements to make the story suitable for children. That won't be the case with Sleeping Beauty’s Massacre, which is planned for a 2023 release.
